Grass tiles.

on: July 11, 2011, 11:08:32 pm
I was working on some sidescroller tiles and the grass I created really bothered me, I think it might stand out to much. I am concerned it Isn't stylisticly the same as my dirt tiles to the left of it. I am also concerned it might be too busy and blurry.. So I was wondering if you guys think I should redo it or just move on with the other tiles. If I do redo it, should I try a different style, something more simple?   :-\   ???

I think the grass has too strong shadows which makes it stand out too much.
You have the right shapes, but you should tweak the palette.

Also, the part where the grass meets the dirt is very dark compared to dry rocks which fade in smoothly.
Try having grass that hangs down the sides to naturally blend the dirt and the grass.

I suppose I should have clarified the grass does'nt meet the dirt like that, I have transition tiles. I just put the dirt next to it to compare the dirt tiles to the grass tiles, so you can clearly see the style change, which is my main concern.

ah, well of course, what I meant was the dirt below the grass :)
Edit: It's such a harsh color and it makes a large dark area which looks quite out of place.

I tried just reducing a few colors and this is what happened.
So much detail in there, I've struggled with grass tiles myself and I can never get it to look like grass great job on that, I'll have to study it closer..

Feel free to elaborate on that. :P
I think the biggest style difference between the two tiles are the increased contrast in the grass, the amount of colors and the dark area below it.

I think Seiseki is on the right track. I think the contrast just needs to be tweaked, lighten the darks and darken the brights in the grass. That way you keep the detail in the OP but balance out the focus a bit.

It would help a little to see these tiles in context.

I would completely change the shadow under the grass to the next lighter brown color, the shadow contrast is too stark IMHO.
For this, a long time have I waited.

I myself like the OP version better. In fact, I'd add more highlights to the dirt below the grass
