Axe

on: June 28, 2011, 04:39:03 pm
Hello, I'm new here, I was appointed by my friend Sven Ruthner Ptoing the vulgar, I asked for his help and he showed me this site which I think is very good.

Let's get right subject ...  :)

I did a great process in one piece, drawn, scanned and made many updates I got today came in and I'm not satisfied, you may miss some details as the cable and also on the blade, I thank you for the PIXELJOINT several friends who are helping me in process, as my dear Jinn, Hiure, Miascugh Varock and Shade.

Looks great so far! ;D You're still working on the handle right? (I think it should be longer and fatter, it looks like you could really easily snap the handle just with the weight of the blade)

My main crit would be to have more of those straight diagonal highlights on the flat of the blade, because the dark blue you've put there gives the illusion that the side of the blade isn't flat, that it's some weird bumpy surface. Just add some of those highlights (in the same color as the highlights of the blade) and you should have the illusion of a shiny, flat surface.

Another thing is that the highlights on the sharp edge don't denote a clear light source. Remember, the only difference between shiny and matte surfaces is that shiny surfaces more accurately reflect the light that comes to them. This is why they have brighter highlights and darker shadows. Therefore, to achieve the illusion of shininess really well it helps to put very dark areas right next to very bright areas. But to this after thinking about where you want the light source to be and deduct your highlights and dark areas accordingly.

I look forward to seeing your progress!

The vertical highlights that goes from top to bottom on the side of the blades do not reflect sharpness of the blade. It looks like at the base the blade isn't sharpened, a bit like the side of a guitar. I think making them go diagonals or horizontal would improve readability.

Yuri, Sorry I did not understand quite what you mean, you mentioned that you would look better in a diagonal line without these curves? Would you like an example to understand better.  :'(

I mean the highlight would help emphasize that the blade is sharper if it wasn't perpendicular.

A, but now I understand. Maybe I do not think it would be nice, and maybe yes. Because in my head right foot would be the lighting, the look better, in my opinion .. Lying may be a little polluted, you would want others opinacem so maybe I might be wrong.  ???

Hello, here is an edit:

Both ends of the blade needed changing to show the angle of the sharpened part. Also make it the same width all the way around, it reads more like a blade that way.

Don't darken the blade where it goes inwards, as this makes it look more like it's in shadow.

I haven't done the highlights because I'm not very good, the shape should be clearer now though.

The shading looks good, but I'd have never guessed it's an axe. It looks more like a guitar or a bizarre gardening tool.

Your latest update looks much better! To solve the guitar/gardening tool problem I still say you need to make the handle longer and thicker :)

Wait, so this isn't an "axe" guitar? Where is the blade? If the guitar body is supposed to be the blade then why is it 3 inches thick? Do you have any other images of this axe so we can see what you are aiming for, because right now it's just a shot in the dark. :-[

@ Ceddo I will do a test and posted here for you as soon as I do have time.

@ Thedaemon Well, the miascugh pixelJoint I suggested something like this:

More up as he mentioned, it would be impractical, would be unpleasant to handle and not very sturdy. Maybe I can take those buildings with ropes in this work, together with the said Ceddo may change this aspect guitar / tool bizarre.

Agreed. Miascugh is pretty pro at texturing things from what I've seen after all. On the other hand it looks much more thicker than previous versions, which were pretty thick for what they were to start with. Might wanna flatten it out in the middle a bit more, or perhaps make the blade thicker?

Sorry, I'm not Bome in English, I am Brazilian.  :(

Well, now you may update a draft of strings, and a draft of new reflexes, a friend gave me a ringtone that might not be making sense of an ax because all the reflections were not pointed at one side only, but some others left to right.
Note: These strings may be up to facilitate the work on the cable, I would like you fizesem some observations.

If I understood that correctly, then he's right. Reflections on a relatively flat surface should move in the same direction. When they rotate like you had them, it gives a sort of cliff-face-like appearance.

Maby youve lost so much time, becouse you didint start properly from the begining :)
Shape pf ypur axe reminds me much more the music instrument than weapon...

If you mind it from begining, its all right, but if that would be weapon from the begining it have to look like thing for hurting people. Weapon suppose to be not a toy.
Im newbee in the pixelart, but maby you need sometimes few steps back, becouse in my opinion you spent so much time for colour all axe, witch is very nice, byt you didint think about shape of this weapon.
Quick edit, hope it will help you. Its not perfect, but probalby looking more like a weapon

Copule of days before ive been visiting some middle age castle, here is one of my pictures taken in there. There are some axes from middle age used for the knights movie several ears ago. Maby it would be helpful for also another future works with axes.

Hmm .. Now yes, I loved the editing you did, and I think he was in position, it looked more like a guitar, I look upon a basic issue of what you did and tried to portray this aspect means that Halberd,at the top and when the cable passes around the blade.
