GR#054 - Fall - Anatomy, Portrait

on: June 05, 2011, 07:28:34 am
Been wanting to do something with orange leaves for a while, as well as continue the theme of my Greenery piece, so I've come up with something along these lines:

A tree-woman with a dragon fly on her pinky finger.  :)

Thoughts on pose? Anatomy? Shading? Etc?!

I'm not sure if I would have picked a dragon fly, just to keep the pieces in scale, but scale does'nt really matter, I guess. I'd say this peice looks like its going to be great, It appears anatomicly correct and the concept is very neat. :)

Only thing I think you should do is make it more tree-like. Give it more feeling of bark, that the skins in layers, so it differentiates more from human skin. Also maybe add some branches or something on her? Looking good though, as usual eyecraft.

@bengoshia: Yeah, I've been thinking along the same lines. I plan to have a general wood grain texture happening over all the skin in the final, but I might "branchify" the hand a bit to carry the concept further. Outside of that I don't know if adding any more bits sticking out of her is going to be friendly to the composition. But I get what you mean, I'll keep it in mind.

@Ovyx: hmm that's a good point about scale. I hadn't really thought about that. The main reason I selected a dragonfly was colour, its delicateness, and it's spindly form follows well from the lines established in the composition. Can always swap it out for a bird if it doesn't work out, I guess.  :)

EDIT: Bit of an update:

I dig the concept :) The anatomy looks good overall but the arm seems to be at a very uncomfortable, if not impossible angle in relation to the body.

extend your arm outwards and try to bend until the little finger is at that angle. Hurts very much :)

Huh, weird then. I must be really flexible or something. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Hold on...

As for the piece itself, it's looking like your avatar promising. Not exactly sure how I'd suggest making a wood grain texture, so for that, other than pulling up reference, I guess I'll leave you on your own. I might like to see a more branch-like approach to the hands, though. Can't wait to see when it's finished!

EDIT: Well now it's starting to hurt a bit, but it wasn't that way initially. ow ow

Massive help! That is exactly what was bothering me about the piece, though I didn't know it until I saw it
