I liked the program "Project Dogwaffle" a lot, because it has a large number of tool presets based on real-life painting tools, and at the same time it easily allows to experiment and mix the settings, to produce for example a mix of watercolor and pencils. Very very fun to use, it's very motivating.
You might like MyPaint, then. http://mypaint.intilinux.com

Has anyone using the newer Wacom tablets ever had a problem with the nibs? There's a lot of stuff on the net with people complaining that the nibs wear down way too fast. I'd find it very odd, especially considering I've had my Wacom Graphire4 for years, and although the rubber on the pen grip has long since dissolved, the nib is still pretty much the same as it was when I got it (or at least it feels like that). This may be because of the plastic covering I have on the tablet (which came with it, I might add).

Nope. My Intuos4 came with tons of spare and different feeling nibs, like felt marker feeling ones, spring loaded ones, ones that feel like pencil graphite, and the standard nib allotment, and none of them have worn at all. Only issue I can attest to was the felt tip getting a little dirty looking just from contact with the tablet, which I rub the side of my palm on all day, but none of the tips on any of my wacom pens (even on the Intuos2 I used to have and the non-wacom tablet PC digitizer I have..) have ever had a problem with the tips.

Maybe we're not arting enough.  Or maybe people are too hard on their equipment. Who knows!

Well I have a bamboo fun medium and the advertised "paperlike surface" did grind up the pen nib pretty quick at first.
It doesn't come with spares too so I had to buy some.
After a while the surface becomes smoother and the "paper" effect wears off to make room for the usual slippery plastic tablet surface which eats up pen nibs a whole lot slower.
That was the previous generation of bamboos though, I don't know how the current ones fare.
Does scaling an image blur it?
