Standing animation

on: April 29, 2011, 11:25:52 am
Need some tips on how to animate subtle breathing for this sprite-size. Right now it looks kinda jerky and unnatural. I can't really drop the entire torso down a pixel at a time without making the motion look insanely exaggerated so I tried to do some sub-pixel blending magic on it instead, but that didn't work out so well either. Hmmm... maybe it's just not meant to be? Opinions? Is it possible to fix this somehow or should I just drop the animation altogether?

To me, it looks like he's more in a semi-fighting stance, than breathing.
I guess he is moving too much up and down to breath. Perhaps just animate the torso more, and the legs and arms less?

If you take the time to notice, while just breathing, only head and torso moves (that's me, anyway). I guess it's more a horizontal movement than a vertical one xD With his chest inflating and all.

Sorry If I sound confusing ._.

He's moving too much up and down. His shoulders shouldn't move, only seriously unfit people breathe like that. Healthy breathing makes the stomach expand while the shoulders are still.
He definitely shouldn't be moving his hips or knees, that's just odd.

However, I think a more dynamic animation like the one you have looks better in a game even though it doesn't resemble reality that much.

It looks like he's panting after a heavy exertion.

Oh, this was supposed to be a she actually :P When I draw men I like to draw them manly! ...except judging from the responses so far I seem to like drawing women that way too :-\ Hmm... less muscly then.

Made a quick attempt at animating just the torso by shuffling pixels oh so subtly around, but at this resolution it's really friggin' hard! I'll give it another go tomorrow and post that. Thanks all :)

I redid the head and slapped on a lipstick-pixel to help with the gender-bender issues. Tried tweaking the anim some more also, but I don't think I'll be able to make it work. Time to ditch.

I dont know about anyone else but when I breath my shoulders moves,  looks more like a breast movement in the last one  :/

Dude with lipstick still looks like a dude. :P

The problem is the barrel chest and shoulder-to-hip ratio... I'll make an edit later if I have time.

Dang! :P

Yeah, the shoulders look way broader than the hips come to think of it. I don't quite see the barrel chest tho, is it a problem with the shading or the general pose or maybe both?
