My Campaign: The Stairway to Success!

on: August 17, 2005, 05:44:07 pm
So as you know, there is an upcoming election for partial-modship, and as you can tell, I am running.

But what does this mean to you, the loyal voters? Does it mean I'm going to tower over you, controlling the mods in every way possible? Does it mean I'm going to throw bans left and right just for laughs? No.

My platform is a simple one. You know what you want when it comes to a forum, and that's why I want to give the power back to the people. If you think a certain member is causing commotion and you want it taken care of, just PM me. If you think that the off topic thread is getting a little too off topic, just PM me. Even if you think I'm doing a horrible job, just PM me, and we can work it out.

Now you may be wondering what my opponent skipper stands for. You may think he's a lighthearted candidate who will do good. Well, take a look at this photo my publicity team recently stumbled upon...

As you can see, most of skipper's platform is based on eating babies. Is that the kind of man... nay, BOY you want in power? One who will do nothing more than abuse his power and eat babies? I will speak for all of you and say no, that is not the kind of man you want in power.

So remember friends, a vote for Evan is a vote for liberty, power, and the pixelation way. When it comes time to vote in the upcoming election, just remember to vote Evan: The one who doesn't eat babies.

There are six values I think about in a representative. Could you tell me how you fare in each please?

1. Activities/Challenges

2. Forum Liberties

3. Tribunals/Judging Offences

4. Fun/Attitude

5. Critique Giving

6. Following the rules

Thanks! :)

1. Activities/Challenges

I personally love challenges and activities. I feel they're great for building skill, and they really help when you're lost for inspiration. I've been thinking about some activites and I think it'd be fun to implement a weekly(?) type challenge or activity.

2. Forum Liberties

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by liberties. Perhaps it's how I feel about the rights of the members, or something like that. Like I stated before, I think that a lot of the power should belong to the members, since they are really what we're moderating for. Yeah, it may sound like a cheesy political line, but it's true.

3. Tribunals/Judging Offences

I don't think we'll have a whole lot of trouble in the mean-time with too many offences, however when the final version of pixelation is put in place (or at least the full forum) there may be a need for a system. I think the three strikes policy is a good one. Most of you know what it is, but to clarify, here's my idea. If there's an offence (not like, a joke here or there, but something taboo) here's what I propose is done.

1) The user is warned, but in a laid back fashion.

If the user continues their actions...

2) The user recieves a PM about their actions. (If a certain reply/post is the problem, that post is edited or deleted, which is to be decided by the mods.)

And If the user continues...

3) A vote takes place. The user pleads their case, and the users can vote whether or not the party in question is guilty, however it won't be a poll. You will submit your reasons via a reply, or perhaps a PM (depending on the situation). If the user is found guilty, they may recieve a short, temporary ban (perhaps somewhere around 24 hours.)

If the user comes back and continues their actions, the mods and whoever is elected will decide what to do with that certain member.

4. Fun/Attitude

I have no problem with having fun. I think this whole forum should be about having fun. That's my attitude towards this small community. I don't think it should be an all out off-topic party, but I think we should have some fun. If I wanted strictly business, I'd go to eatpoo. I say that people should be able to joke around without getting penalized, however it shouldn't get out of control. My general attitude is fairly laid back. Unless you're offending someone, spamming, or doing something wholly inappropriate, I say joking around is fine.

5. Critique Giving

I feel that the critiques are really the main reason we're here. At the old pixelation, a piece would get tons of replies, but most of the replies had nothing to do with the piece itself. Many of the posts were "awesome, is this for a game?". That's not gonna fly here. Unless you're giving praise (meaningful and specific praise) or a critique (or in some cases, a joke) you probably shouldn't be posting. Really think about whether or not you're contributing to the thread if you make a reply. If the answer is no, perhaps you should go back and really look at the piece.

6. Following the rules

Although there are no rules in place at the moment, I feel that the "unwritten rules" are important. In order to keep control, following the rules is important. If I'm elected, I'll play a huge part in creating a system of rules that you feel are important. I don't want another board where there are countless numbers of spam posts.

That's my stance for the most part. To sum it up:

I want you guys to feel at home here, and at the same time have some fun. Make a few critiques, crack a few jokes, it's all good. Just don't go overboard with it.

Now I don't mean to attack you for this thought, but I think it's a topic that would be worth discussing.  I don't think a vote that depends on the general Pixelation public for the verdict would be a good idea.  Sure, it works in theory, but what would happen is that a bunch of members who are vehement in one direction or the other would vote, with everyone else who don't really care that much either not voting or casting careless votes.  It wouldn't be an accurate sample.  I think it would be better for the moderators to decide rather than the public.

Yeah, that makes sense to me. That will often be the case, however I think that when it would come down to a certain member who was, perhaps, disrupting the community in more ways than one would be the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back" it should come down to what the general temperment towards that person is, whether we make a poll about it or not. Perhaps we'll just try to guage the general opinion.

I think the latter would be a better Idea, to guage the general opinion.

Being voted in by the membership, one may assume that a representative is working for the majority, so there's at least some concensus that you have already been gauged, but it never hurts to stay informed with the people you're to serve.

Have you given any thought to a specific challenge you would like to run if you are elected?
