Any good MOBILE ways to sprite?

on: February 19, 2011, 09:32:18 am
I kind of just want to lay down on my couch with something small (that's NOT a laptop) and sprite away.  Does the Ipad or something else have anything that's a realistic alternative way to sprite and animate?  I'd probably be willing to invest in something if I could just lay down sometimes and casually sprite my stuff instead of working at this desk I've grown to hate.

I've looked a bit.  So far I see no viable options.  Just some really crappy pixel art apps.

I suggest a Nintendo DS Lite + Flash Card + the homebrew program Animanatee.

Also, here's a topic asking a similar question: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=11441.0

in case you want to read the book I wrote on Animanatee  :-[
I make actual NES games. Thus, I'm the unofficial forum dealer of too much information about the NES

Honestly I'm not in love with those options.  The screens are tiny and the interface meh with not exactly the highest of quality of touch screens.

I tried a few non-digital options as well, without success.
Graph paper + colored pencils had inconsistent colors and it was difficult to work at small resolutions.
Colored sand (sand painting) does not work well for pixel art, and it was messy as well.

Most of the cheap android tablets that have come out recently have a short battery life (3 hrs or less).

I don't think that there is a good solution for this yet.

I'm thinking about something around the size of an ipad (could be smaller) with basically something like Photoshop (I do more than sprite!).  Too bad it doesn't seem to exist.

I was looking for something for my PSP a while back, but didn't find anything. My ideal app (for PSP anyway) would have the cursor snap to individual pixels, with maybe the shoulder buttons for zooming and the analog pad for scrolling.
I tried colors for DS and it wasn't good at all for pixel art, it's more of a painting tool than anything. Same for Sketchbook Pro on the iPad.  Painting was cool with it but nothing precise enough for pixels. Still worth it if you can find a good stylus for it though. Finger painting is fun, but kinda wonky. It's still a good way to maybe get a simple sketch while you're on the go, and then import the image to your computer or email it to yourself. I think it exports to .png too. The only thing that bothers me about it is that the only image size you can get is, well, the iPad's native resolution (1024x768). You can find all the info for sketchbook pro for iPad <a href="http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/item?siteID=123112&id=15119465&preview=1" target="_blank">here[/url].

Animanatee as a homebrew DS solution has worked wonders for scratching out basic concepts on the go that I can export to the PC and refine.  There have been a few sprite bases that I drew on there while I was in the bathroom that I ended up taking to a finished level. Hard to find an all-in-one package for your mobile graphic suite needs, but you gotta understand that a truly portable photoshop would need some more costly performance requirements for it to be anything cheap.

It does exist. That would be a 10" tablet PC running Photoshop.

Personally, I've got a Pandora which works very nicely with grafx2 (though I haven't yet figured out how to right-click using the touch screen). The screen isn't huge at 4.3" but I find it to work well and it's got a decent resolution of 800x480.

EDIT: grafx2 dev yrizoud let me know that button modifiers were available in unstable, so I've built the latest SVN and now I can right click with a modifier key, yay! (yrizoud also fixed a bug with button drawing on the Pandora, he rocks!)

I need a large screen.

I hear Photoshop can be ran on some Tablets with large screens.  Does Photoshop Express have tools that could be used for spriting?
