Buffalo Animation

on: February 14, 2011, 04:44:54 am
Just doing some animation practice on my little pigbuffalo.

Edit: I've noticed there is a bit of an optical illusion when the hind legs come forward; the right leg looks as though it morphs into the left.

Based on the famous animation:  http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/24/Muybridge_Buffalo_galloping.gif

I think the hind legs need some more work.  You need to smooth the animation a bit on the left hind leg.  And like you said, the left and right hind legs are not easy to distinguish.

Really cool.
Yeah the back legs kinda jump around oddly.
Crest of back pokes up and down.
How about a little ear flop when he brings his front paws down? They're soft pliable parts yet they look very solid since unaffected by physics.

Louie is right, the animation needs smoothing out, particularly when the front leg is popping forward.  I feel that part of the distinction issue is actually coming from this as well.  The animation is very gradual as it's moving backward, but if you track the thigh it moves backwards very smoothly and as soon as it hits as far back as it can go it doesn't move back forward, it teleports.

A side note... I've never noticed until now how much a buffalo looks like somebody sliced up a horse, a bear, and the bastard child of a cow-pig and stitched them together Frankenstein style....!

They kinda look like a horse/bear/gorilla.  I can't remember the last time I saw a real buffalo, though.
