[WIP] Portrait

on: February 02, 2011, 07:13:17 pm

Having issues with that shoulder area. I feel that I'm dithering it too much, or perhaps incorrectly. Not sure how to fix it.

Big improvement with the hair.

I thought the likeness could use some work. Your face is too wide. To preserve her facial expression, her left eye needs to be a little squintier. I think you've given the necklance too much priority. Same with the shoulder straps. Too bold/contrasty/distracting. Kill 'em.

The major problem I see is that the tilt of the eye line is wrong.  If you draw a line across the eyes in the ref pic you get about a 4:1 slope.  In the pixel version it's 8:1.  This would be ok if the whole head was tilted, but the nose and mouth match the angle of the ref photo, and the result distorts the whole shape of the face.

I suggest you pull the eye on the left down quite a few pixels and then rework the cheek and jaw lines like Mathias pointed out.

I added more contrast to the shadows of the face to make it seems less wide, as well as pulled in the right side. I also reshaped both eyes and repositioned a few thing.

Decided to redo the shoulders entirely, reworking the shape and shading. Still got a lotta work to do, obviously. Dithering and AA and all that fun stuff. I also plan to add the white straps that I removed last time.

now the shoulders look like they are forming, even though it's still rough it looks better.

I'm having issues with the shading now, I really have no idea where to go from here  :blind:
