Is this a good start?

on: December 03, 2010, 11:59:12 pm

I'm thinking I'm going to add some animation to it.
It's supposed to be the dragon from dig dug, I'm planning on making the main character from dig dug too.

Any comments and criticism are welcome.

I myself don't like the wing too much.

This is what I have so far for an animation.

I don't know why one frame turns white.

And don't pay attention to the smoke, it wont be coming out every single time, its just a reminder.

That looks quite good, especially for only a start. I really like it.

The only things that appear obvious to me are the wing details (the veins disappear in one frame, and overall they lack proper shading), the top of his head lacks shading (I think you need the light green to go back a bit further. Right now he looks like a little bit like Gorbachev.

I also think the arm movement needs a little more smoothing. The drop is a bit too sudden and deliberate. It looks a little bit like he's playing a piano. The elbow joint probably needs to move more.

Really great design/idea though. It looks great, and aside from the wing detail thing, it'd probably look fine as a finished product (to me anyway.)

Woops I forgot to mention that the wings were unfinished. I've finished the whole thing now though.

I'll get to work on that arm. Thanks

Edit Again*

Does this look good? I'm trying to just stay with 16 colors, but it's getting really hard now.

I think you should on standing frame of this last creature add shadow under (our view) left arm.. to make it look more 3D

Done :)

I'm going to bed now.

Also, is that better with the shadow now?

Wow, lovely style. I would suggest an extra frame for completing the loop smoother but that's pretty awesome.

Ahh I see what you mean now, I'll fix that. Thanks.  ;D

And an extra frame in which animation, the dragon? Cause I already plan on that because I need to sync up the two animations.

Also, any GraphicsGale users out there know how to fix my problem? Every time I add a new frame, and set it to have transperancy, so I can see the onion skin. My whole frame just turns red and makes the animation flash red. I can't delete the red either. It's kinda hard to explain.

Also in my new frames, instead of drawing with black, it draws with red. :/

I love the animation for the main character, but I can't stand the jagged lines. I think a little more anti-aliasing could do wonders for it You're using that dark blue-green as a shading color, and I think it could work well for anti-aliasing.

Jeez, I just love watching that animation, it's very nice and smooth!

Thanks Frawg, I'll try to do a little better with the anti-aliasing.

Also, does anyone have any links to some animation tutorials, this is really the first thing I've done like this and I'm just curious if there are any good tips or tricks out there.

*Edit

Oh yeah and update

Should I add more pause between when he puts the pump down and when he starts pumping? I kinda like it fast like this, but I don't know whats best.

Errr, wha?

Your anim already has good sense of timing, anticipation, exaggeration etc, how about you write one yourself instead :P

Depends. If there's something off-screen you want the viewer to look at as well (like the harpoon hitting a big fat alien or something before it gets blown up), then a delay would probably be good. If all the viewer needs to see is the guy firing the harpoon and pumping the box, then it's fine as-is.

Your animation is great, I don't think you need a tut for it.

Haha, thanks you two, ;D but I was just looking for some tricks, to maybe make it go by faster.

But seriously thanks. Made me smile. :)

Anyone know why whenever I try to open up a picture, I can't set the default program to GraphicsGale? It worked just fine when I had the free edition.

Yippee.
