You better get out this here town, stranger...

on: April 11, 2006, 09:31:01 pm

I decided I really needed to practice palettes and mixing colors.  15 colors including transparency.

EDIT:  Image should work now.

Everything looks very shiny and plasticy. Heh, he looks like the kind of cowboy who washes dishes for a living. Don't really have any crits, but I really like it. Hmm,well maybe the brown on the pants doesn't really look like an intermediate colour.

Thanks, crab.  It does look plasticy... maybe I should try to make it a little more gritty.  I like the effect the brown has on the pants, though, so I don't know about changing that.

The image shows up fine for me, and obviously for crab as well... is anyone else having problems?

The plastic feeling could be remedied easily by diversifying your highlights more. Currently they are all too similiar. The high contrast also contributes to the plastic feel, try adding some folds and perhaps remove the higlights that are on the lower part of the coat, the thighs, and the top part of the boot. That will help give your sprite more volume as well.

I should mention your palette is very cool though; and I was able to see your image when it was posted initially, I'm curious what the previous posters were viewing with? (I'm using firefox) I heard that netscape sometimes has trouble viewing certain images as well as pcs with parental controls.

Thanks for the crits Dhaos.  By highlights, do you mean the very lightest color I have in this image (the white)?  I tried to take your crits into account.  I definately like the way the legs are now more.  I downed the contrast for the poncho, too.

Keep 'em coming.

EDIT:  I use firefox and saw it but I switched to IE and got the X.  Saving the file again with a new name fixed it somehow.

I think a bit of a cast shadow from the hat onto the poncho might help. You'd probably want to keep it subtle so the face doesn't look weirdly lit. The boots don't really look too cowboy boot-ish. Other than that, it's looking quite good.

I just looked again and noticed the border on the poncho, it might look good to darken that a tad by using some of the leather shades for the darkest colors, so it's a bit more visible.

Thanks pawige.  Yeah, those boots were pretty poorly done.  Changed them and the palette a bit.

very nice, the newest pallette edit rocks.
the only thing i can see wrong is the all of the sprite except the poncho has smaller areas of shadows and highlights, which of course is due to its size but i think it can do with a bit of dithering or something.

I think the hat tips are too straight. It looks really flat and weird like that. If you added some depth to it, it would make the sprite a whole lot better.
