[C&C][WIP]NES-styled Protaginist, also first post.

on: November 10, 2010, 03:23:44 am
Hi Pixelation community,
A few years ago, I was introduced to pixel art. After a few quits and starting back overs, I'm now trying to get myself back into being a pixel artist. Though, I'm sort of a noob at pixel art ,so I thought making NES styled sprites would be easier for me. Plus, I'm a fan of the NES. I'm not sure if it's 4 or 5 colors, since I'm using white also. ;D

Yeah, realized a few mistakes on the sprite(shirt was pretty obvious to me).
Anyway, I hope to have a nice experience here!

Edit:

I increased the contrast between colors significantly, and made several minor edits all around. It's hard to explain what I did exactly, but I think pictures speak louder than words.

Ah, so that's how use the NES palette correctly. I was a bit stumped on the shading, so thank you for seeing what else I did wrong!
EDIT:Kind of like the hair style a bit, so I didn't change it.

Double posting ftw ;D
I'm kidding, I'm just going to bump this thread with a redesign with the above sprite, chibi style.

I should really start the running animation now.
EDIT:Just a few fixes with the sprite.

Hi, I have noticed two things in your animation:
1. The green body grows and shrinks while walking. Instead, it should bounce like the head.
2. The left leg is in front while the left arm is in front, too. (and vice versa) You should do it "crossed", like putting the right arm in front when the left leg is in front.
Here's an edit to show you the difference:

old / new

But it still looks a bit like the sprite is skating. I only know how to fix this in a 8-frame animation. So I added 2 additional frames and changed the leg positioning a bit to push the bouncing a bit more. (This is only a quick edit, arms and legs are a bit wacky, but you should see how this would work, I guess)

'hope you like it  ;D
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. Yes we can!

@Lazycow Thanks Lazycow, I did a 6 frame animation because I thought it would be appropriate for an NES game.

yay... now I can't change the topic title now that I changed styles.
I think I messed up with the highlights or something, but either way I think it looks nice :).
