Portrait

on: October 16, 2010, 04:18:11 am
So.. I'm trying to get back into the swing of pixeling things.. and so I tried to make a self-portrait.

v1

v2

v3

v4

v5

I'd like some C&C to help improve myself, please. (I don't want to shade the hair.. too annoying >_<)

Its' really hard to determine a light source.  I'd go for more contrast on the face with a more definitive shadows after determining a light source.  If nothing else shade the eye sockets and around the nose and neck. Don't be afraid of a more contrasting color.

I think the acne should be a bit pinker and the black mouth line should be thinner.

@dpixel: Ok, I'll give it a shot.
@DtFM: I'll try to fix the mouth, but those aren't acne, they're freckles. :S

So is this better?

I'll let someone else comment on the shading, but I'll mention that the anti-aliasing shouldn't be grey. I made a quick edit:

Not really sure what style you're going for so it's hard to comment too much. But I can definitely say the mouth needs to be moved up maybe 1-2 pixels and to the right 1 pixel. The eyes look pretty amateurish, you should never draw the full oval shape, instead make the top and bottom eyelashes and pupils, leave the rest for the viewer to create with negative space.

There's no style I'm trying to go by, I'm just.. trying to draw a face >_<

So... improvement?

(I temporarily took out the freckles, got annoying :/)

Another update..

The last one looks fine, but I recommend outlining the top of the nose as opposed to the side.
