Warhammer 40K WIP

on: August 22, 2010, 07:54:20 pm
Hey guys, I just joined and figured I'd introduce myself with some things I've been working on lately.

(This is blown up to 300%)

Also, here's a self portrait I did recently (clicky to go to my blog/portfolio):

The 40K stuff is all sketched out on paper first, then scanned in and pixel-ized. I use Photoshop for all of the image manipulation and animation.

A bit about my background: I'm not-quite 24, and I've recently graduated from Sheridan College w/ a BAA in Animation. I've only recently started doing pixel art, but I love the challenge. I'm looking forward to getting and giving good feedback on work.

I may do that in the future. The image was originally just going to be a still portrait shot, but I ended up adding the flames b/c I had a little extra time to kill and I wanted to try out some fx work.

Well, your work is very nice, i see a lot of detail on form, but there's a few problems i have that i think you can work on. I can tell that you are a very talented artist, but you are newer to pixel art (which is still art, but is a lot harder to master)

I think there is just a bit too much dithering, and it would be nice if you explored color and contrast a bit more than you have.

Thanks for the crit. I'm pretty confident with my technical ability, but my color theory and overall artistic sensibilities are areas where I think I need the most improvement.

Yes, that's an area i'm trying to learn myself. On some of my early pixel art (like my avatar i don't feel like changing) i used too much dithering and not enough hue/saturation switching. This site can be great for learning those things.

I agree, you will get a much smoother effect with a larger pallet. By no means am I saying that what you have done is bad, If anything it's an example of dithering gone right.
