Your work is very odd (not in the bad way, its just different, which I enjoy), especially when it comes to faces, are you intending to make your faces more abstract and stylized or do they just usually come out that way? Also are you using reference for your work? I think if you used reference you could be much more convincing with the body of this animal, you could also be more accurate about color. Give this a background, make it a scene, more then a just sprite doodle, it has a lot of potential but of course, every piece anyone makes does, its just up to the person to fulfill it. Also I personally think it looked better before the update, but thats just me.

I hope its a good weird :$
I understand what you mean, the thing I started off here with the Dodo was a bad combination of colours, i kinda want to smooth it down.
In this piece theres gonna be more focus on lighting, it's more of me trying to make something and also understand it, so a lot of CC is helpful.

Here I'm making a pod of plankton and salmon/otherFISH for the whale,

your take on this piece is appreciated! :)

EDIT: The form of the blue lines are pretty much what all the ocean is gonna be and I'll do some manual .PNG transparecy for pixeljoint.

I think you should block out basic forms before you go to detailed texturing and shading. Also, use a reference, luckily, I found a great one in almost the same pose as yours.

Mainly, I notice the nose/snout/face and tail find is too skinny.

I strongly feel the picture on the right is a lot more better and composed.

and no the reef isn't DONE. I'll be studying some pictures before I make my attempt, brush up the whale and it's done.
