Helm made some very good points.  Here's a tip that may or may not work;  don't be afraid to give your characters features which would be considered in the anime world to be "ugly", such as a wide face, long/large nose, smaller/squinted eyes, I think you know where I'm going with this.  Avoid a homogenized look where everyone is a beauty queen/model.

that dragon owns. i think the reason your elf was mistaken for a girl is because he doesnt really have any manly faces(which most anime males dont)

Love the dragon.  And teh shading on the face of that guy.  It seems so smooth.
Back from hiatus, just remembered how excellent this community is at forming technique in a fledgeling artist of any kind.

 Looks good. Nice colors. However, you should resize the image to get more details. These looks like those  hi-res pixels or high res sprites that are like drawing. Lack of detail really. So, you should resize them down. 50% is good for this.
