[WIP] Moving Mountains

on: May 19, 2010, 07:19:24 pm
Working on making a mountain, but I've never made a pixel art of this size before and I've never been good at pixelling nature/land
Any tips? I wanna keep it simple and the color count down. I plan on making the bottom part fade into the background using a bit of dithering. I also don't plan on making this with only 3 shades, I'll add more as I go. I just could use any help I could get on this.

Get some references if you don't have any already.

first off i think u should go smaller ... maybe half...
just start blocking out basic sapes and basic shading, then , with  something to hold onto, ur imagination will do the rest

10 colors

Interesting, Gennoveus
Also onek, I need it to be that size because it's going to be the background in a game, but I will take what you said into consideration.

EDIT: Here's an update. Still got quite a lot of cleaning up to do.

EDIT2: Updated the picture again. Also, rather than making the bottom half fade, I'm going to make it be covered by mist/clouds that will scroll ingame.

Why do you want to manually AA this? To be blunt, this seems to combine the clip-arty flatness of vector with the tedium of manual AA on a large scale.

Anyway, a lot of it seems random. Try this: draw lines on the mountain, horizontal & vertical, that wrap around it like a mesh. Then shade accordingly.

I agree, it's barely recognizable as pixel art. Might as well do this with a brush in photoshop. It also feels flat, and resembles more of a crumbled piece of tinfoil than a mountain.

Perhaps it could be because it has too many dents in it and not enough protrusions. Rocks jut out a lot more than that.
