Critic on a cowboy sprite.

on: April 30, 2010, 10:43:14 am

Hello... I would love to have advise on how to improve this guy. Pose, items, pallete... I would appreciate everything, since he might be an important character ina project I have in mind.

Thanks in advance!

Nacho.
I come here humble, trying not to repeat the mistakes of the past, for improving my art and try to help the others improving their own when I can...

some more contrast would definitely add to the clarity, but this is great so far

More contrast? I dunno. For me, it's the dark red bg making it hard to see.

The face is the least readable.

the main thing to me are the color ramps, they don't depict the materials properties.
For example the skin will be more saturated and red while being in the shadow than fabrics, fabrics won't have as bright highlights as metal and so on.
Cast shadows should be darker, like under his hat for example.
Also having the character foot cut by the frame make him floaty.
I did a quick edit, not being a pixel artist it's quite horrible shape wise hehe.

this tutorial should make things easier to understand (sorry for my frenglish)

I also thinks that the green could be greyisher. Maybe some dirt on the clothes too, because, you know, it's the old west  ;D
