Minor Palette Study

on: April 28, 2010, 09:21:25 am
Since unfortunately I'm accustomed to unorthodox spriting methods, my palettes have been less than desirable when working on more professional projects. So, I figured I'd try out a few things and see what I could come up with.

A series of helmets, each one after the first is an edit to the previous.

Going to try varied other helmets as time goes on, so as to cover a wide range of potential colors and see how they all fit together. Er, how they CAN all fit together, that is.

i can't help much with the colors as they look fine to me, though i might try to use more hue variation myself.

you might not want any crit in this regard, but the yellow ones don't really read well as helmets. were you using any references when drawing them?

No, no references. I'm not sure how... what do you see when you look at that sprite? I'm trying to imagine what on earth else your eyes could interpret that as.  :P

well nothing in particular really, but the first few moments before i spotted "helmets" in your text, i didn't know what they were.

are you going for something like this http://creative-ancient-theatre.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/helmets_and_brestplates_002.323161521_large.jpg or this http://creative-ancient-theatre.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/helmets_and_brestplates_006.323154043_std.jpg ?

I would have guessed they were some kind of medals, you need to add some depth, make them look 3d.

Nope, not reading as helmets . . . just blobs. Some generic power-up item or something. The green one especially.
When in doubt, always refer to real-world examples, that's what you're depicting. Their flat.

How do I make them not flat? Nevermind what they're supposed to be, I'd like to take things one step at a time.

First problem is that you don't have a good light source which makes them look 2D (no depth). This also makes it hard to determine what they are as they look just like blobs with outlines, cept I would say for the visor on the green helmet.
