I started a doodle, then ended up with something i started to like.  Hopefully posting it here will push me to continue forward with this.  Who knows - maybe I'll turn this into a full-on mockup.  I've found that I tend to work pretty dark and drab and really have to push myself to make things happy.  Definitely something I need to grow out of.  Feel free to C+C

Great looking tree :y:

There's something going on with the angle of the house and the leaves. It makes the roof at the top-left look out of place. From that angle we should probably see both sides of the roofing.

I love this! I actually have to strain to see any pixels at 1x, so great job on that.  :)

My only minor nitpicks are the leftmost edge of the house and the rightmost upper branch, they seem a tad jaggy.

Oh, and loving the reflected light from the water.  :y:

The tree is definitely competing with it's surroundings in priority and style. I feel they should be one in the same. The tree is the point of attention, yes; but it seems as if the tree is out of it's environment. The outlines, contrast, and saturation levels are what I think is contributing to this. Your treehouse has so much lively colors, hard (yet at the same time soft and fitting) outlines, and high contrast. The surroundings have low contrast, low saturation, and pretty much no outlines. The rocks that the cliffs are made out of look like clay.

Just seems off to me.

Anyways, I must let you know I love this. I love your style. And I'm liking how good you are at creating legit textures, again, such as the rocks on the cliff, using only some carefully placed, unrefined blotches of color. I need to learn how to do that.

Hmmm... I intentionally kept the BG much less saturated and less contrast specifically to protect the priority of more important things like the tree and other game elements yet to come - but you are definitely right... something seemed off still.  I had a hunch it was line-style consistency.  I added more lines to the angled cliff walls to see if this would help, and I think it fixes the issue quite well.  what do you think?

The grass is too turquise or too saturated.
The cliff with the blue shadowed rocks looks best imo.
Photocopier: the fact that arne can also code so well
Photocopier: is horrificly unfair

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the palette changes you made
