Pixel Art / Re: Feedback on Scenario
« on: May 06, 2020, 04:33:23 am »
One major thing I see immediately is the mixing of pixel sizes. It almost always hurts the overall piece to be mixing pixel sizes.

Another is the gradient shading on the floor boards and walls. I think every pixel artist at your stage has done that exact same thing. I'd suggest looking at how games have handled interior wood textures.

Don't be discouraged, three months can feel long, but breakthroughs will come if you keep at it. Look for inspiration, look at others' creations in detail, continue creating, keep learning, and you'll improve.

It's starting to come together. I don't think I've ever manually blurred in an animation before, but it's not half bad here. I'm happy with the upward movement and swiping motion. The landing needs more attention. I'm hoping a bit of polish smooths out that snap to the idle frame.

EDIT: I'm alright with this outcome I think.

EDIT2: Some more tinkering

Pixel Art / (WIP) Jump/Block animation
« on: May 03, 2020, 07:34:10 am »
I'm getting some eyes on this in early stages because I intend to finish it soon. Don't mind the ghost image, I know it's there.

What it is: A basketball player jumping high to block a shot overhead.

My issue: This isn't quite getting the punchiness I'm trying for.

My plan is to put some twist in the body on the "hit" of the blocking motion. And while the landing sticks, I'm not sure how I'm going to make it feel more alive.

Thanks for any input.

These are all perfect suggestions. Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is a widely used resource, I used it myself in an art class. To draw what you feel and think is great because it helps you develop a tone and style, and can be a release. And, one that I wish I had thought of earlier, is to copy. I did this for a while too, copying expressions out of comics. I am not a good artist, but I do know how people begin and how they improve.

It sounds like those videos addressed the best and most important step. To begin drawing, one must draw. Draw draw draw. If you get the "I don't know what to draw" feeling, like all of us do, it's a mental block. Move through it. Your goal is to draw. Draw anything. Draw your cell phone. Draw the chair in front of you. Draw the shape of your dog's nose. Your hand. The tear in the knee of your jeans. All the art you have seen in video games, anime, movies, in museums and shops, they all came from an artist that put in the time to draw. They focused on their weaknesses and improved afterward, but they all started the same way- by starting.

While I miss some of my personal creations due to hosting drops, hard drives being lost or destroyed, and the rot of time, I've also accepted that much of mine and others works will be temporary given a scale of time long enough. I used to save everything when I was younger, with the intent of hoarding it all forever. Now I just enjoy the memories.

It is nice to see Pixelation is still functioning though.

I'm wanting to make an explosion in the end, and then a skull in the smoke, but I'm not very good with it
Only way to get help with it is to make an attempt and show it!

For now it's pretty simple, I want to see it developed farther. The main thing I have in mind for now is that the chemical reaction, the color change, is very quick. Makes sense because it's swilling around in the bottle, but I would recommend a frame or two showing a change occurring.

Being able to see just the top row of teeth without the mouth opened, partially or otherwise, makes it feel a bit like a child's drawing I feel. I think you should either have both rows of teeth protruding or open the mouth to expose the top row, which would probably make the lizard look much more threatening.

This is showing a lot of improvement already, keep at it.

General Discussion / Re: Welcome Jad to the mod team!

That is sooo disturbing.

Like the kind of disturbing that makes me want to call my mom and make sure she's okay.

But yay for Jad, I've been wondering when the mod upgrade would occur.
