Pixel Art / Re: Frog WIP

So this is what it has become so far. I feel like I have stepped forwards in a few areas and backwards in a few more.

So I took a bit of a break from my game tiles and started this little guy. I know there's a bit of anti-aliasing issues all over the place, but I Want to know what you guys think

UPDATE #1:

Readability is still an issue with your latest edit. The colors are so close in hue, saturation, and value that at a glance it is difficult to tell the difference between them. The magenta sticks out a little, but it is still rough and the outlining is a bit unnecessary. With something that small, a complete outline (whether black or otherwise) takes away from what could be there in the image

Pixel Art / Re: Newbie Trying To Pixel An Island
« on: October 12, 2013, 01:50:05 am »
I would, on this new island, play with more natural, flowing shapes rather than geometric cylinders.

It's always helpful to do a little sketchy stuff first.
And I know, there's about a million lighting and structure problems in this edit, I just wanted to show a little bit of an idea on how the newest image can be developed.
I just felt that this towering structure deserved buildings to emulate the overall height of their foundation. It also helped to remove a bit of the stair-stepped geometric look by creating an almost triangular structure. That and some basic shading (with a bit of faulty lighting, my bad) to emphasize some areas.

Pixel Art / Re: I Need Help to Make Dungeon Tiles

With that most recent one, I would advise playing with the depth of the stones a bit more. They appear a bit flat and the contrast could be reworked a bit. I think you have a great start here and it's been a fun time editing the image to help out.

So if we take a look at this, we can barely distinguish your two darkest colors. This may just be a difference in monitors but it's important in pixel art to think about the visibility of your colors. Just raising the brightness of your second darkest color helps out a lot.

So the next thing I noticed is that you don't seem to like your food to touch each other on the plate. Sometimes rocks are just pressed up against one another and are just gonna have to get along. Also, the extremely varied rock sizes is part of what contributes to your grid issues, but the best way to fix the grids is using several varied tiles (which I know is something that I always forget or just don't want to do) with the texture you are trying to create.

Lastly, as you can see in the edit, I wanted to work with the lighting and color a little bit. Experiment more with this, as it can really make your pixels pop out more or recede into the background, depending on the desired effect. The midtones are emphasized more and the darks aren't as prominent; they merely serve the effect of shadowing rather than outlining the rocks. The lone tile on the left and the middle column are the greyscale from the original, and the other two are my own experimenting with color a bit. Almost no two are exactly the same hue, though they are similar in saturation. I'm not the best pixel artist in the world, but I hope that I helped in some way.

And yes, I'd say it's usable for a game. Just be sure that with the large contrast in your lightest and darkest colors that this does not conflict with any foreground images.

Pixel Art / Re: New Pixel Artist, need help with 16 bit-ish style
« on: October 10, 2013, 09:05:05 pm »
I would advise a bit less noise in some areas, it seems a bit crowded for a background piece. Perhaps if the tan tiles are meant to be sand, they could be more smooth with a few rocks and extraneous bumps here and there. As for the plants, I would advise looking at some references on the site. A lot of the ones that I seem to find most interesting have more individual clusters of pixels as defined leaves, rather than stray pixels to represent leaves, if that makes any sense.

Hope I helped somewhat

Pixel Art / Game Tileset Help
« on: October 10, 2013, 08:44:28 pm »
So I have been working on a little platformer for a while, and it's been so long since I have visited the site that when I checked it today, I felt like the community may be able to help me work on my aesthetic a little bit.

So the characters are square for purely sentimental reasons, as it's a remake of the very first original game I ever started working on, and, at the time, I was bad with bounding boxes, so everything was made of squares. Still, I think I could use some help here.

The player is the yellow guy, npc is grey, enemy is red.
Some of the tiles are either mistakes or have not yet been worked on very much.

OH! An important note I remembered, ther two bluish layers in the background are layers that have some parallax scrolling for depth (and the white in the corner is an area I haven't quite worked on yet, oops), so their positioning is a bit varied by player positioning, and the sky looks something like this:

Definitely in.

I like dark, surreal things and games... So yeah... Holiday times again! Last year was fun, let's see how this goes.

One thing I note about the edit that looks neat that you didn't accomplish so well is the contrast between shades. Experiment with that a little, high contrast can really make something pop.

Pixel Art / Critique: Colorful Woman

First off, it's been a while since I have been on here... And anyone know when the site got this horrid looking skin and when it might get the old one back?
Second, I was working on a project in class today when it inspired me to go home and mess with colors in pixel, so I did. This is what became of it:

So I would love some constructive criticism and some opinions on the piece. Made it in about two hours, so not the largest work I've made.
