General Discussion / Re: Recommended image hosting sites

If you use Firefox there is a nice PlugIn for it to host your images comfortably, using integrates Imgur, Photobucket, and ImageShack: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/1174/

Once you installed it just click the right mouse button on the image you want to use and chose "Upload image" - thats it (at least, as long as the picture is online somewhere already - otherwise you have to open it in a browser window first).  :)

I think it looked better without the details you added. But I like the roboter's shape and look a lot. I'd love to see the reference. :)

edit: I just realized I can find it in the book's preview. Nice for exercising. But how about creating a brand new sprite for your game instead of using someone elses?  ::)

Hello Poyer,

I am not good at anatomy but I try to give you feedback anyway: I would say the proportions of both, dog and alchemist, are somehow displaced. The manīs legs seem a little short to me, especially the lower legs. The torso seems a little too long and the head could be more expanded, I think. Also the way he holds his sword looks a little odd - might be the forearm being so straight and a little too short maybe? The dogs head seems a little too small to me, too.

I would give you a doodle to show how to fix it, but I canīt do any better, I guess.  ::)

edit: I should also add that I like the shape of the dog, though, and the colours you used. I think they really fit the subject.

An edit I made, tried to make it pop out more, hope it helps, good luck.

I think the skin is too dark to have enough contrast to the hair. Either the skin should be lighter or the hair should be darker than in your example to be better defined.

I actually think it is pretty perfect the way it is. Not that I have much experience on pixel art so far but I noticed your avatar right from the start as an example for a pixel art work that appeales to me because of three things in it:

- the colours, which are refreshing and nice
- the idea of a stony human like creature that looks down to its shoulder at another creature, a mountain goat as an animal that perfectly fits into the landscape shown and last but not least
- especially the androgynious stature of the stone creature that to me looks like a young woman, the way I expect maybe an elf might be looking.

I am actually not much into fantasy stuff because usually I find it a bit too candy coloured and cheezy. I guess the reason I like it is all about a somehow sterotyped fantasy subject that you managed not to look sappy or cheezy but intersting and mystical to me instead.   :y:

I agree so far. And it cerntainly it is not that simple as I just wrote it down.

Bringing up Leonardo da Vinci's drawings and comparing it to ones sketches today - regardless of weather those are good or not - you may not want to ignore the fact that in da Vincis times anatomical studies for example were something outrageously new and, the way da Vinci learned it, something strictly illegal and dangerous, too. We all benefit from his work today. So one should always keep in mind the temporal context and the originality in art as well as the plain result.

It bothers me a bit that the middle tree is textured, but the others aren't nearly as much. Sure, they might be in different perspectives, but I don't thing the left three should look that flat. :u

I guess that tree is still in progress, isn't it?

Uh, the question what is art - I have seen other communities stumble about this before, I guess the definition of art is defined individually.

That is going to be hard to explane now: In German language I am always on about telling people to differentiate between art and and somehow nice looking pictures and objects - which is more precisely to be called illustration in my opinion. And illustration to me is not art in a deeper meaning just as design is not art to me. Its rather some pretty and/or functional handcraft to make something work better or to casually comunicate with people in a way, maybe, and it is somehow related to art of course. But real art to me is something that is meant to touch people deeply, to stimulate and to make them think, even to make them change opinions or perspectives. Doesn`t matter if this works on a large amount of people or just on the artist him- or herself though. And it doesn't matter if it is commercial or not. And again of course the bounderies whrere this would begin and that would end are not that clear... But as being a graphic designer I would never call myself an artist - my aims are just not that ambitious.

But I know that the English language is more open in the definition of art and almost anyone that is creative in a way is called an artist. Quite confusing to deal with that for me, in a way.  ::)

In other words: you might fiercely disagree but pixel art as you define it here to me is not really art, at least not by my German definition. Its more exactly some kind of illustration first of all. Which doesn't mean it is not possible to create real art by pushing pixel I guess.

Beat me up now, if you want. :D

I tried to nudge this thread towards helping each other and not debating if something is pixel art or not by my opener comment, but it seems this thread wants to head that way, so okay, sure, explore the ideas

By the way, I would not mind you to push this thread to the discussion board if that helps. I don't want anybody to be pissed off because it is not about a concrete artwork anymore but all talk and opinions only. I still enjoy the discussion though, letīs forget about the emoticons I posted up there.  :)
