Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] SHMUP Tank Boss!
« on: November 22, 2006, 02:05:41 pm »
I just think you should redo the camo, as it is right now it doesn't make me think of camo but rather that somebody have spilled coffee over the whole tank or something D:

I think the contrast between the dark and light camo-colour-blotches should be lesser, plus that the blotches would be more uniform in size..

A bit like that (sorry for hueg pictarr)

THe operator is super, though :]

Hello to you also :3

There's one question I have before I can give you good critique on the shading; Where is your light source supposed to be at? :0

Ryona: From what I recall he is studying the Wario Land 4 style to make his own mario sprites; Everything is made by him :]

Which is funny, because that question popped up the last time 0:

Anyways Soup, I'm wondering about the hair/wing things that stick out from the sides of the head; They make the goomba look like a clown and I don't like them D:

Why are they there?

Delicious! I can picture the final product in my head and it makes me salivate.

The shading on the rocks seems to uniform and sharp. Maybe have more of a light fall off as the rocks get deeper into the "void", that is, looking at the rock wall there, there's a bit more of a gradual light fall off as your view moves from right to left of the tiles.

I don't like how the grass is shaded...but thats early days I assume.

Looking forward to the next update  :)

Actually, I am having a bit of trouble with the grass; if you have a suggestion, please show me :3

the bottom shade of bright grass is the "platform" where the player and NPC stands, that's why it's highlighted in such a blatant way, the player should be aware of where you will be landing once you jump.

Oh, but the backgroud is supposed to be über-detailed forest of lushness, this is simply a placeholder. That the two colours are dark green and some yellowish light green is just to remind me of that the end result I want is a dark lush forest with magical greenish shining-through-leaves-light flowing down below. :]

So don't you worry :D

Also, I was on the phone while posting the thread so I have a few more things to add;

The big 'hole' thing is supposed to be filled with water, so the background and possibly also the rocks are going to change colour as it goes deeper and the bottom is of course filled with seaweed, bubbles and nice fishies. This is also supposed to be a forest village; Plus that the screen size is supposed to be that of a Nintendo DS so you're not supposed to see this much in the vertical space; When you're up walking on the grass, you will only have a vague idea of what is down under water, and in the beginning of the game, you can't dive very low, so it's supposed to be a kind of secret-in-the-middle-of-a-village-type of thing.

Oh yes, this is a forest side village, so If I'm able, I'll add a house and so. Maybe a nice bridge over the water too.

And coming is a diving main-character and a GUI. :]

Rant over, go on now, you all.

Ba-dinng! I figured I'd post the beginning of this mock-up I made. I just realized that the light source is off between the rocks and the incussion in the middle so I figure i'll just flip it. But please do CnC and edit away. Yay.

This is for a Zelda 2-style metroidvania game that I will make in a hundred years. It is also my first BG art like evarr. So go easy on me. Not. :P

I know that it is something you stumble upon in most RPGs, but I'd say that you shouldn't think of Dirt, Grass and Water as "Random Pixel Patterns in Green, Brown and Blue."

If you're going to make a dirt pattern for example, what kind of dirt would it be? How would it look at the edges and is it dry or watery; Stony or dirty?

Same with the grass, try to define strands of grass; preferrably ones that stick up more or less.

And please make some transitions, because as it is now, it wouldn't trick me for a second if you hadn't put that character there.

But please, I'm not trying to disencourage you; Rather the opposite, I'm trying to make you find your hidden powers; Awaken your passion :D.

Now I say rework it. Think it through; Make a pattern and then think of how it's all going to stick together. And What KIND of grass is it? Try to make that kind of grass. And what KIND of dirt is it? Imagine it as if you wanted to walk on it. Try to make that kind of dirt.

Water is hard so I'll just leave it up to you to experiment with it :}

oldest-      older-       older-      old-          new-

This is some progress, really.  :crazy:

Regarding the hand, I don't really mind that the left hand is seen in two frames, my brain kind of makes it into one frame, but we'll have to see what the other pixelationers have to say, heh.

In my humble opinion (I read that like onion :>) bumping your thread when you have made a relevant update is nothing wrong to do. Since you're making something productive, I fail to see why it is shameless and bad to bring it to the community's attention. :\

So anyways, I went and updated yours with something I tend to do with people's pictures when I edit;

My raping of your picture has effectively erased all detail there ever was so at least you won't look at it and go "Aaw, how am I going to better than that." like I do when people edit my pictures. But anyways, I made the arms the same thickness, lowered the head as to make him look more 'Ferocious' and fuxxered around with his hair. Also, I tried him to look Lion-ish :3

I also tried to make his body parts into basic 3D-shapes that would actually trick the viewer into being rotatable (does this word exist? D:) I made his torso kind of hulking forward (I really don't even know what hulking is, damnit.) and so on. I kind of see and understand the way you are thinking when you're drawing and it's very 2D and abstract in a way. In a very "It really doesn't have to look like something"-way, and I respect that. But this is my take on it.

Oh, and to make it all more confusing, some "explanation" COUGH COUGH.

The arms are quite easy to see anyway so I concentrated on the legs and torso. I sincerely hope that this helps you more than it confuses you.

Good luck!

EDIT: Answer to Panda (omgz, i am stating a good example also.)

I didn't know. I just figured he posted the other one much later. Well, then I see what you mean. I still think it's no big deal, though, but that's just me :]

Pixel Art / Re: Trying to make a fighting game mockup
« on: November 03, 2006, 11:53:39 pm »

Really nice, I've always liked fighting sprites. I did little touch ups to add depth to the image.

I am sorry, but I really like the 'yours' version a lot better. Although I agree that his skin in the original is a tad bit too saturated, I think yours lost all the depth at the skin while at the same time, the highlight on the pants was brought forth in a not-so-smooth fashion ):

I do like the top of his cap, though, and the shading style you used on the darker parts of the pants. Heh.
