Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] First try on a 16x16 tileset, need some help
« on: May 19, 2007, 03:31:32 pm »
Hey there! Nice first attempt :) Something I'd suggest would be to make your stars in the windows not so apparent. They kind of stick out too much. Being a beginner, I suggest taking a look at the Castlevania tiles for some inspiration and ideas. They did a fine job at creating atmosphere within the constraints they had to work with. Or perhaps something like this might help you inspire you:

A while ago I was playing around with making some dark platforming castle area, a la Bubble Bobble but never got anywhere. However I tried similar things you were going for, with the torchlights and the predominantly brick wall. For a "mood" setting, I made the bricks darker towards the top overhangs. Perhaps doing something similar to your wall and pillar will give you the mood you were aiming for. And it can be done with a low colour count as well. Actually your tiles shouldn't be more than 16, but you can even do it with less.

It's a HUmar. In any case, I'd suggest looking at fighter sprites (your basic King of Fighters and Capcom types) as better inspirations. Your colours are way too jarring, if you'll notice in the actual art, they're warmer, more orange with brownish shades than burn-your-retinas red and yellow.

If you're just getting into pixel making though, it might be better to start on easier things. There are plenty of tutorials listed for your enjoyment.

General Discussion / Re: Wii, 360 or Ps3?

Wii~! When they get more in stock >.>; Not even a Wiimote left in the place. Maybe that nice red or silver one will show up by the time my birthday rolls around. Besides, it has Gunstar Heroes and Starfi on VC.

Have Legend of Zelda and they will come.

Hell, even my mom wants to play a game on it, and she hasn't touched a controller since we all played Sonic Shuffle on Dreamcast. (She's in love with the Rabbids).

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] SHMUP Tank Boss!

Green isn't very good for desert camouflage. I'd go for more dirt camouflage (like brown, beige, etc) but if you google around you'd notice the desert tanks with green on them are mostly beige to match the area. However, since your location is pretty orange, then the tank would most likely try to blend in more with similar colours. Nice tank though, but the gun barrel is pretty small for such a big vehicle. Doesn't make the boss look very menacing either.

Punky is too cute, by the way :D

I suggest going back to a larger chest. It would be cooler, like WonderBoy 6/MonsterWorld 4! A tiny one just doesn't seem so impressive...

If Okami were a 2D game, I think it would look similar to that! (Though your's is more Chinese scroll painting than Japanese woodblock ;)) Nice stuff :y: The sprite-boy is too cute.
