Pixel Art / Re: NES Dungeon Readability
« on: December 08, 2010, 05:24:23 pm »
Hi there!
Been a long time since I posted something but I was browsing by. Thought I'd chime in.
A while ago I was doing some Druaga "sketches" during down time and it reminded me of what direction you're going. Perhaps it might inspire you further with your tiles, so I'll post some examples rather than talk about it...

(Hope the image links work...they're stored on Picasa)

I too was playing with the black ceiling thing so hope it helps you :)
Cheers,

Fifth FTW! :y: :y: :y:

BTW can I use your TARDIS for one of my own?
Sure I guess. Only 'cause you got the Brig in your avatar ;)

Been a while...
(Hope these work, I'm using a new location to store them. If they don't work, I'll move them when I get home).

Layering sprites, but I really wasn't paying any attention. Just having some fun! If I have time, I have more ideas to mockup :D

Starting another one. What's a NES license-platformer without the vehicle level!

I'd suggest sketching out your portrait first, scanning it in and working from that. If you don't have a scanner and photoshop, then it still doesn't hurt to plan on paper and colour in with whatever you've got on hand (markers, pencil crayons, etc) since I'm assuming you don't have a wacom pen. Usually I'd sketch out my characters, and only start pixeling them when I'm happy with their design. I would also throw some colours on quickly over my sketch to work out the character's own colour scheme prior to any pixeling (whether it be a portrait or the sprite). It's always best to map out and plan things beforehand then just jumping in and wondering what's a good palette to use. Also keep in mind that your sprite may (should technically) have a colour limitation of like 16 colours (15+transparency). While your colour splashing sketches don't need to be those 15 colours only, it's good to keep in mind to use those colours as bases so you'll have some consistency between sprite and portrait.

I was uninspired to do anything for the WonderSwan mockup, and had nothing much to do at work except wait around and click refresh on various internet sites...

The little red guys came first, then the green, then the emoticons, hog-man and duck, then the dancing elf, and then somehow an Alex Kidd and Wonderboy redux appeared. I think I really like that palette :3

Woo! God Hand! You're my hero.

Here's mine. Too tired to make anything more exciting (as you can tell from the lame dialogue I shoved in). The return of 2D sidescrolling Zelda!

(Yea, Link didn't get his Hero Clothes yet, but somehow can call Midna...)

Sweet! I actually just bought this game (ie. finally found it). Found it in the used bin for $9. Totally looks the same (minus "a few" colours). Awesome stuff. Nice to see some Phantom Dust love!  ;D
