Pixel Art / Re: Grass [wip]
« on: April 21, 2010, 07:12:38 pm »
You don't have to tile all the grass. You could just put a plain green background, with grass tiles in patches.

It might help to put borders around these patches too, combine that with roads and other objects, it won't look so bland and tiled.

But there may not be anything wrong the tile itself per say, you just can't overuse it like that. Look at Legend of Zelda III, Final Fantasy 6, and Seiken Densestsu for more inspiration.

Oh yes I forgot to say this is the beginning of my mock-up, I still need to add different stuff, scenery, etc. Of course it looks boring now ;)
Glad you like the tiles :P

Btw, the colors had to be this "boring" , cuz the full game will have a dark theme, where you will create chaos :P

Ooh, that hurt to read.

No, boring does not equal dark. You can have a dark theme with fun colors. Or a better word, with interesting colors.

Chrono Trigger...

Dark and interesting.

It's getting better. Added two transitional frames.

Also, do you know of a free GIF maker? Mine is limited to 20 uses, unfortunately.

Well I feel stupid lol.

OK, I added the new animations as per reference :P. How is it now?

So, I wanted to try some animation out, and I used this for reference.

I want to turn this into a full detailed image, but something is off about it, but I'm not sure.

Can you guys help me out?

No, there are sprites with 4 colors, MegaMan has 5, and the contra guy has 4.

Anyway, for the most part, as long as you use the NES colors and use 3-4 colors a sprite/background and keep the resolution, it'll look like an NES game. You don't have to complicate yourself too much with minor details.

I remembered seeing something like this in Super Mario RPG, maybe you can get some inspiration from there.

Watch out, it's kinda big...

Current versus ref. Coming out pretty good color wise I think, but that tongue is still teasing me. Not quite like the ref, but at least you can tell its his tongue now.

OK, I tried to look at the ref more closely, and add rough shading to get some kind of depth going.

Without tongue, with, and tongue by itself.

I think the shape is going well, but that big white block represents the lineart I'm stuck at. Since the curve is ever so slight, it's really hard not to come into jags.

But, I do like how this is coming.

Hi, I was working on a Lickitung, and I got stuck on his tongue.

Without the tongue, with, and the ref.

It just doesnt look like hes pushing his tongue out like in the ref. I'll keep toying with it until I get it, but advice would be helpful.

Thank you.
