General Discussion / Updates to Forum Rules
« on: February 10, 2022, 11:56:31 am »
I've updated the rules after some internal discussion about how to handle moderation of NFT projects.

Old rule:
Quote
Rule 2: Do not rip artwork. Ever!

Always clearly state what your references were in making a piece. If you sketched in pencil, color-reduced to 1bit and then went to work on it, okay. Ways like this are completely accepted and nobody's going to shout at your for it, but it's good to know anyway. If you stole somebody else's artwork, 1bitted it and then submitted it for critique, not okay. If caught red-handed, by moderators or users, and the case is clear you ripped, you will be banned and forgotten forever. Other similar instances of fraudulent behaviour like posting other people's artwork without permission (regardless of them being edited or not) or jobs without delivering the promised payment will reap similar rewards.

New rule:
Quote
Rule 2: Art theft and fraud is prohibited.
  • Do not post other peoples' artwork without proper permission or licensing. Note if the intent of the post is educational, it might be covered under fair use.
  • Do not attempt take credit for another artist's work. However, it's okay to post studies as long as you have proper permission or licensing and the reference is clearly sourced in the post.
  • Do not engage in any other instances of fraudulent behaviour, such as jobs without delivering the promised payment.
In cases where it's clear there is theft or fraudulent behavior, a permanent ban will be issued.

Rule 2.1: Advertising Web3, NFT, and blockchain projects and jobs is prohibited.
Due to the rampant fraud in the Web3/NFT/blockchain spaces, we cannot allow advertising of these projects nor job listings concerning these projects.

However, discussion of Web3/NFT/blockchain is acceptable as long as it does not endorse any projects and is topical to pixel art. It would be acceptable to have an informative thread about the shortcomings of Web3 or discussing ways the technology could be improved for artists.

I've also removed "Rule 3: Post only pixel art" since we have boards where it's appropriate to post non-pixel art and this is already covered by the "Stay on topic" rule.

Quote
Rule 3: Post only pixel art.

Now this is a bit of a controversial subject, but it hopefully can be cleared out at least so we can go on with our business here: Pixel Art, is art where there's specific attention paid to the fine manipulation of picture elements. It deals with the informative quality of specific, single pixels. If the art you're about to post has not been pixel-pushed on that level, don't bother. Automatic AA, soft brushes, filters, smudge tools, all are indicative of index-painting, or at least dirty-tooling, but do not always mean your art will not benefit from pixel-level critique. If you've made something using some of these tools and then you're able to reign the piece in by optimizing the palette into using the best possible amount of colors, went in and pushed single pixels until everything is right, then it's probable we'll be able to talk about your art and how it can be made better. Always be clear of how you made things, only post concept art when it's relative to a pixel-art piece you've made and never never try to decieve us. As above, workstages and process animations are optional, but always welcome.

And lastly, cleaned up a few typos and added a bit more information about properly posting sensitive/non-work safe content (ex. violence or artistic nudity) - that it may be posted underneath an appropriately descriptive tag. Previously the rule only referenced thread titles and did not cover spoiler tags.

General Discussion / Lospec Gallery Kickstarter
« on: January 14, 2021, 06:40:30 am »
A common sentiment I've long seen shared among pixel artists is the wish for a modern gallery that's tailored towards displaying pixel art.
That wish may soon be granted because Lospec just announced a Kickstarter for their restrictive digital art gallery today!

Check out the Lospec Gallery Kickstarter page for more details!

Lospec Gallery will be a place to to share your pixel art, chiptune, lowpoly, voxel, textmode and more.

Features to look forward to:
  • Modern interfaces which make it easy to upload and browse art from any device
  • Custom art viewers which display low-spec art properly, without compression
  • Small, focused community where you can more easily get to know people making similar art
  • Full page display that focuses on your art
  • Pixel art viewer automatically zooms in without blurring (and allows user zooming and panning)
  • Moderated categories and search terms so you can find similar pieces with ease
  • Spec Detection automatically reads and displays info about your art such as resolution, palette, filesize and more
  • Timed queues so all new pieces get an equal chance to be seen on the homepage
  • Easy social media posting, so you don't have to worry about resizing and uploading to multiple places
Lospec is a free community and resource hub developed by a single person, Sam Keddy (skeddles), and funded out of pocket with some help from donations. Some of its great features are a searchable tutorial database, palette list, pixel art uploader for social media, png crusher, and many more. The site launched in 2017 and has only continued to get more and more useful to artists thanks to all the hard work and dedication that has been poured into it. It's incredible just how much Lospec has done to help pixel art knowledge become more accessible.

Why Kickstarter? As skeddles puts it: Unfortunately human beings are very needy, and tend to die when not provided with food and shelter. The main goal of this Kickstarter is to raise enough money to keep Lospec's creator alive long enough to finish this gallery, though if we raise more it will allow Lospec to hire even more humans to work on the project, meaning it will be finished faster and with more features. Even donating $1 gets you access to the devlog and lets you be included on the supporters page, but if you are able to contribute more than that you can get beta and alpha access, and some other cool rewards, including shirts with a design of your choice, stickers, and postcard sets.

At the time of this post, the campaign has already raised nearly $8000 and has nearly met its goal after only ~13 hours! I've contributed to the campaign myself since this is something I've long awaited personally and I'm thrilled to see so much positive energy towards a medium I love. If this is a project that excites you like it excites me, please consider contributing or helping spread the word! (Here is a Twitter post by the official Lospec page if you'd like to share it.)

Moved to General! Yeah, if you need a mod's assistance with anything you can always report the post and someone will get to it as soon as possible. I know there are at least 4 mods who are still active including myself, but all moderation is done on a volunteer basis and we all have full-time jobs so sometimes it takes a bit to get to every request. Beautiful work, by the way! :)

Job offers / Re: NSFW Hourly Pixel Artist
« on: May 19, 2020, 01:34:04 am »
We've had a report of harassment and/or price backtracking in regards to this job listing, so I'm locking the thread to help keep all relevant information in one neat place.

The information that was provided by the reporter on May 18, 2020 can be found here.

Detailed testimony by avidanimefan (OP) on May 19, 2020 in response to the report:
1) She never sent me work that she made. Which means she never performed a service for me. She never shared files, or gave me what I paid for, no matter how displeased I was with it.

Who pays someone for work they never got? No one.

2) She claimed that I have scammed other people from various countries in the same way that I scammed her.
That's false. All my payments to artists are documented via paypal. If she has people who are claiming that I've worked with them, she should show you the proof of where these people corresponded with me. She can't, because they don't exist.

3) Had I not deleted her from Discord (just yesterday in fact) I'd definitely be able to show you the entire conversation. Needless to say, the screen shot where she's showing me tell her about moving pixels. that's not a micro critique. She was asking me about the length of a character's shorts, and I told her to shave a few pixels off.

That's literally how much of a reach she's pulling on you and everyone else right now.

In fact, I took my time and wrote out detailed explanations of every piece of work, which she ignored for the most part. I specifically did that because I didn't want to be chained to my PC for 4 hours and give her some freedom to do her work. Did not work out that way, instead I waited around for long periods of time after I paid her.

Ask her to show you the entire comment thread, you will see long periods of time where she simply doesn't say anything at all. You could argue that she was working, but she actually told me she got paid then disappeared for an hour.

Also, google documents registers when you go idle. I was using that to work with her. It went idle several times.

4) Simplicity of the work I required. All she needed to do was recolor some pixels to make it look like skin tight clothing on 1 character. according to her that character took 2 hours. (Which by the way, she messaged me while she was working on it, and by my estimate it took her 10 mins to actually do it to completion.)

5)The second I responded on twitter, she removed quite a few of the comments, then blocked me from her page. (Once gain, in my opinion to shape a false narrative about what actually happened.)

6)I also sent her an email this morning offering her a chance to make the 60$ back so that she could at least recoup some of the lost time she seems so concerned about. No response.

It is not the job of the moderation team to take sides in disputes such as these unless there is serious clear-cut misconduct, so please exercise caution when working with the parties involved in this conflict. We invite users to make their own judgements based on information presented.

If any party has additional information to add about this situation to the thread, please contact a mod.

General Discussion / Re: Site for "WIP" images
« on: July 26, 2019, 12:47:29 am »
Most people here use Imgur, a free all-purpose image hosting site. While it doesn't have a built-in zoom function, embedding an image here with [img] tags already does the trick and will work for any host as long as hotlinking is allowed since Pixelation has built-in pixel-perfect zooming. Try clicking on the image yrizoud posted to zoom in or shift-clicking to zoom out and you'll see what I mean.

Pixel Art / Re: Mockup for a personal project.
« on: July 24, 2019, 05:02:09 am »
Nice work so far! Your character sprites have a charming classic RPG feel.  :)

I agree with Curly - there’s too much detail drawing the viewer’s eye away from the important areas. Reducing the detail in areas distant from the walkable parts of the level and increasing contrast between the two areas to visually separate them more really helps to bring focus to what’s important and reduces eye strain.

does the reply captcha thing goes away after a period of time being a user here? kinda...annoying...
Yeah, I'm not sure what the internal settings are exactly but that's only for new users to help cut down on spam.

btw, since this is a pixel art forum and not a unity one...do you know any good place where i can get some help on that part /unity workflow for sprite based games/ when issues pop up or do you guys are into it so that i can ask here?
You can post a thread about it in "General Discussion" if you have a specific issue or need tips on workflow, etc. Plenty of people here work in gamedev so I'm sure you can get some help. You can also post a devlog for your project in "Devlogs and Projects" if you want to spread word about it and get feedback on your updates.

If you want the guns to move independently from the rest of the sprite, then I recommend separating them onto a different layer and animating the "firing" animation (like recoil or rotating the guns) separately from the jump. When you implement the sprites into the game, just parent the motion of the guns to the body so they move together as though they're connected. Bullets, projectiles, or particle effects should be their own sprites as well so their frames and motion don't have to depend on anything else.
