Pixel Art / [WIP] RPG Stuff
« on: December 05, 2010, 07:20:25 pm »
Heya!
I'm trying to make some things for a RPG mockup, and I'd like to have some critics on this. For now it's just grass, a tree and a character:

Two versions just for the grass colors, I'm not really sure which ones I should use.

Here's an older version for the tree (I was told this one was better, but I'm not really sure):

I'm pretty satisfied with what I got with the grass tile (I could eventually add some grass tiles, too), but I'm really not so sure about the tree... I read a lot of stuff on trees (st0ven's topic helped a lot, thanks!) and I understand how it works, but still I'm not satisfied with this tree... Any advice/edit would be really appreciated, as I don't really want to work on other tiles before this tree looks good enough!

Hey, got some crits for you! :o Note that I'm not an expert or anything, so maybe my advices aren't that great.

I didn't make any edit for your first image, but just know that you have 62 colors in there. I can see 7-8 of them when not zooming, you might want to fix that. Just try to go with less colors and more contrast, basically, and I'm sure your image will be a lot nicer to look at.

Okay, now for the sprite I made an edit for:

1/ Well, your version. :p
2/ Okay, first thing I edited here was the lines and some shading. I got rid of some colors for now, more colors were not needed yet.
3/ Changing colors, adding shading on beak.
4/ Getting rid of some black lines in the sprite, adding shading at the bottom.
5/ Finally, adding some highlights.

'Hope this helps!

Hey, love your style!
Just wanted to show you this edit:

I'm not really sure about the window, but I just thought with this perspective the left part should be hidden a little.
'Hope this helps!

Hmm... What about something like this?

'Not sure if there are other kinds of chocobos, but from what I saw (http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/5060/chocoboou5.jpg), a chocobo only has 3 long claws, one being behind.

Hey, I tried an edit on this:

I changed the colors, mainly. First of all, I reduced the number of colors from 16 to 10 in this edit. Some colors really were not necessary in my opinion. Then I tried to make the colors a little more "shiny".
I also changed the wing a little, but I'm not actually sure if this looks more like a chocobo, or less.
'Hope this helps!

Here's another edit.

Again, I might have overdone it with the AA. :p
What disturbs me the most with your most recent one is the fact that you didn't AA every spot that needed some.
Here's the comparison:

I tried to make an edit here. I might have overdone it with the AA though.

Tried something too. Bah, not as good as the edit above but since I have it... I almost only changed the colors here.

I'm not even sure it's better, but meh. 24 colors if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks!

Here's my edit. I upped the contrast of the belt (well, I tried to at least :p), changed the shirt so that it doesn't give the feeling I mirrored it (not sure if I'm satisfied with it though) and tried to clear the hair next to the eye patch.

As for the colour restriction. Well, as you can see I'm not a pixel art pro or anything, but I think I improved my little guy by reducing the number of colours. But maybe I'm wrong ? Bah, I just don't know. :p

As for the chibi look, I'd agree if I was planning to use this template for a "serious" game. And I see this character wearing a pistol/sabre just fine, but that would be based on my tastes.

Thanks again for the critic!

PS : I do what I can, but I'm sorry if my english is weird, that's not my main language.

Hi there, first time posting here after being advised to come here if I needed help.
I'm a beginner with pixels and have a lot of trouble doing some stuff. Right now I'm having trouble coloring a pirate for a RPG.

Just so you know, I did only the colouring, the template was kindly shared by green raven (http://www.greensart.nl).
So, first of all, I made the front view and here's what I have so far : (Ah, looks like the shadow below the guy didn't make it with the animated gif)

(Yeah, he's a kind pirate)
So my problem with it, I guess, is coming from the hair. I tried for hours to have nice shadows and highlights, but I'm not entirely satisfied. Also, I'm not really sure there's enough contrast with the cloths.

Here's the non animated version + the start of the side view (I'd need help on the hair here too, I'm just lost here :p) :

So... Here. If you have ANY advice I would gladly try my best to improve this little guy. Thanks!

EDIT1 : Deleted a few colors

EDIT2 : I upped the contrast of the belt (well, I tried to at least :p), changed the shirt so that it doesn't give the feeling I mirrored it (not sure if I'm satisfied with it though) and tried to clear the hair next to the eye patch.
