Pixel Art / Re: PLUG IT! (updated)

Thx, i have to get my homepage offcially up again.  :-\

Yes i do the whole pic in 320x200, sometimes i make a rough sketch in 320x200 scale to 160x200 and scale back to 320x200 so that i have no "small pixels" where they should not be.

In the programm i work in (ProMotion) one can set a grid and use anything as brush (in this case a 2x1 pixel wide brush), and with the grid set to 2x1 and snap to grid it works really well. I could also work in 160x200 i guess but that does just not feel the same.

Have you read about the c64 limitations on my page? The picture has a set backgroundcolour (any of the 32 colours) and in each 4x8 tile (or 8x8 on pc with 1x1 pixels) you can only add 3 extra colours. So if th bgcolour is black you can have black plus any 3 out of the 16 colours in each tile. If you have 4 colours one HAS TO BE the bgcolour. can be quite tricky and a friend wrote me a lil programm that checks if everything is alright with the pic (tho fixing with that programm is a bit tedious.

Cheers

www.ptoing.net/html/c64info.htm

if you scroll down there are 4 palettes, don't mind the grayscale ones. And don't mind the 3rd and 4th one either as they are crap.

The 2nd is the most accurate. I use the first because it is more or less the same just a bit brighter and looks nicer on a pc monitor.
Just save the png file of the palette and make your own pal file :)

I also discribe the graphicsmode these pictures are done in on that page if you wanna give it a shot. This is not just about limited colours, it is quite a bit more complicated.

Hope this helps.

Why do you need somebody to hold your hand from step one?

Just go check the Pixipedia, look at gameart, check www.gfxzone.org, pixel something you feel is up to your skills, maybe try to push yourself a bit, post it and then recieve crits and then you can/should try using those crits to make your work better, post update, rinse and repeat.

I don't think those "here is a squiggly line or blob, aa it" things are much of use really, just apply aa into your work. aaing a secluded line/blob or dithering a globe on it's own is not that hard with a bit of thought. Restricting yourself to say 16 colours, but still don't make stuff monochrome and use aa and other stuff to still make it look smooth is much harder and also much more satisfiying when finished and nice looking.

Just go for it.

Pixel Art / Re: Color Me Pink

I have to say pjupju has a point. I mean i see it's some guy with something growing from him and so forth. Still it would be nice if you said something about it, is it finished, do you plan to take it further. Also, PINK? where? i don't get it, there is no pink in the picture.

what you have atm is an abstract sketchy thing with a nice 5 colour palette, but it can hardly be called pixelart, there is not aa or other techniques that make it look like any more than just a sketch. At least elaborate a bit why you were making it.

As crits i would say, add aa, perhaps try some dither on it, could work fine. Also i think you are not pushing yourself, this looks like something done in 15 minutes without much thinking (no offense)

I think the aa on the hair should go. Looks more like a cape than hair. Some highlights on the hair will definatelly help. I also agree on the blurryness. Fix those and you  have a nice pic.

Darion is absolutally right about the highlight. I can see it if i look carefully, but still it is way too close. You should not be afraid to use colours that are more contrasting. The grass has the same problem as well to an extent.

Made a lil edit

I doubt that the monsters on those battlescreens are sprites at all, as the GBC can only display 40 at once and only 10 per line. So it is more likely to be backgroundtiles. Another thing about background priority: Each 8x8 bg character can has a priority setting, either infront or behind sprites. This always goes for the entire 8x8 tile not just parts of it.

Pawige: ProMotion can handle any bitdepth settings from 2,2,2 to 8,8,8 RGB. You can even have 3,3,2 and stuff like that, which would be good for mophun (urgh).

long defunct machine called the Commodore 64

I don't think so. The C64 is alive and kicking, still a rather big scene going on. Some people here make C64 graphics, namely Helm, Phase1 and me :D
