Not a bad start at all, I would say.

Hey there. To be fair I'm really not sure what do you mean by "towers". They look more like turrets or automated sentries of some kind. Could you specify the purpose of this sprite so we can help you?

I take it that it's based on this tale right?

Either way, I think you might want to place Momotaro himself in a more central position, since he is the protagonist after all. On the other hand, it is a story about brotherhood and equal partnership, so the current layout might be better to convey that idea.

Pixel Art / [WIP] [C+C] Improving classic spritework: The Chaos Engine
« on: December 29, 2011, 12:43:35 am »
Hey everyone.

So I'm currently involved on a remake project for a classic Amiga top down shooter: The Chaos Engine, released on 1993 by the Bitmap Bros. The goal here is to improve some frames that could've used some more work and introduce a few original animations that were left unused. I started working with the sprite sheet for the abandoned megadrive sequel, since it's the only one that features the unused frames I mentioned. Later on, I might attempt to recolour them to the original Amiga OCS pallete. Here's what I've done so far. Left is the original and right is my edit:

Essentially I altered the stance; I thought the original didn't feel like a natural gun-holding stance. It looks like the character is holding his gun right next to his chest, regardless of the perspective. I also didn't like the position of the feet so I changed it as well. The new stance mimics real life as close as I could make it; right arm extended, ready to pull the trigger, and left arm flexed holding the gun at the bottom.

Comments/thoughts? Also feel free to rip appart. I'm not an experienced pixel artist by any means, so all sorts of modifications are welcome.

The palm trees seem a bit too rubery methinks. Perhaps it's the green tone that gives it that appearance or perhaps it needs a bit more detail to look a bit better.

Now, take a look at this lovely screenshot from Cannon Fodder.

I admit as far as detail goes, Cannon Fodder is a bit too "noisy" since the environments were created to seem confusing in order to provide camouflage to traps and enemies, that is, to look a lot more like a real jungle. However, even though this level of detail would be harmful to a RTS, where environments and obstacles must be clearly discernible to facilitate unit management, I still think a bit of noise wouldn't harm static objects, such as trees. Perhaps you could try something like that ;)

Looks like a cross between Chaos Engine and warcraft! Keep up the good work. Looks like something I'd definitively play.

It should be noted that both Helm's and my edit are animating too fast to be a believable walk animation and too chunky to be a run animation.

Walk vs Run

Noted. Probably I'll have to add even more tweens to make the walking smoother at a slower speed. Again, thanks for the help and the free tweens. It's looking better and better all the time.

Early attempt at leg animation. Head, and body movement will come later. Ideally the cycle should be a bit slower, but for that I require more frames to make it look smoother. The plan is to make his movement look really heavy yet not clumsy. Like if every step taken made the ground shook. The terminator is about brute strenght and raw firepower and that's the feeling I'm planning to transmit here.

Any ideas/suggestions/improvements?

I really really like your pallete choice. And the design looks great. Don't want to be a meddler but could you tell us a bit more about your project?

I think the red needs to be more muted to fit into that scene. As it is now, it burns a hole through the plane.

The scene I used is just a test scene. It's not supposed to fit in therms of pallete or illumination. Just in therms of proportion, smoothness and style.
