General Discussion / Re: Music Tools for non-musicians
« on: December 04, 2013, 11:52:21 pm »
@Kasumi
 The turn off of the FamiTracker for me is not being able to play notes with mouse and since I don't have knowledge, I couldn't create any instrument. Anyway, I looked all of them, though I didn't understand a thing about Linux Multimedia Studio, Musagi and Sunvox looks really nice and simple, I think I'll look into them. Thank you very much!

@Crow
 It looks like I have to spend some time on it, though designing your own noise looks easier with this, which is good for me :) Thanks!
Hint for famitracker, try playing with you're computer keyboard. If you have a musical keyboard with midi capabilities, that would work well, too. I can vouch for sunvox, love it, same deal with the keyboard.

I reccomend Audiotool.com. It has a cool community to help you learn and it can be easy to understand for beginners.

Gray/white is not good either, any other ideas? I mean, what am I doing wrong?
I actually think this works, you just need to blend the colors more. I did a quick edit here.

Sorry, it seems you're done with the grass, but I did this last night:

I really only did palette changes, and the two I did have only three colors.

The first is your second to last, which I really like.
The second was me trying to add more contrast to make the highlighted parts stick out, like in the Mana 3 example.
The third was me really trying to make it look like Mana 3. I think it would look better  if you removed some highlights (like I tried on the left), but I was lazy and just messed with the palette for the most part.

Again, I posted this before you said that you're finished with the grass, but really, when is art ever finished? (:

General Discussion / Re: Music!

Orrrrrrr, maybe I've misunderstood this thread's intent.
I think you get the gist of it.
On your musical idea, makes sense even if it isn't the most musically worded, but maybe you should wait a bit before adding music because the ways music is put into a game can all be very different and hard to work with (I suggest songs that loop).

I also mess around with music, although I don't consider myself good enough to accept work. Maybe something to add would be your musical style? I know you mentioned Metal, but on the keyboard do you play jazzy, classical, or just rock? I love the idea of this anyway.

Maybe some concept art for your new race? If it was something like an orc, we would get the general idea because we've seen them before, but we haven't seen this before. After that, i'm sure it will help us (atleast me) see what you're trying to represent.

This was him coloured:

I think the 'lighter blue' spots look a lot better
This is really a huge improvement! I'm really loving your progress.

In my edit one of the first things I did was to try and emphasize the 45 degree line on the trunk and hind leg. The second was mess with the shading specifically on the ear and body. Honestly, the body should probably have a bit of a highlight, but I cheesed it and got rid of it altogether. Third I did some major changes to the trunk and hair. I added more wrinkles to the trunk, looks kinda ok, would still need a lot of work though. The hair looked like it wasn't part of him because of the outline. other than that, I did a lot of minor things like tweaking the eyes, I think I took some weight off of him, made an elbow in the background front leg, a lot of anti-alias, etc.

I hope this helps, but really, your doing a great job and I hope you continue.

Many minor things to make the gold look more like gold. 1st, added a fourth shade for the gold and tweaked palette. If you want to keep the palette low, you could tweak with it to use a same color in the gold color ramp and the armor ramp. 2nd, added bunch of highlights to the gold, both white and the lightest gold color. Very sloppily, though, but I think it helped. 3rd, added some ornate details on the left to try and break up the band there, didn't go too complex. 4th, on the right, tried to add a shadow on the left side of the helm. You already kind of had one, so I just wanted to try and emphasize that. Again, sloppy. Hope I helped, probably missed some stuff and I'm bad at explaining.

Tried cleaning it up a bit. Also changed head position and some of the details. I don't know if you are going for spot on realism, but always use a reference.

Looking back, I made the beak way too small, but its a rough edit and its late. May redo the edit tomorrow.

To make it different from standard pixel art you could try making it offset like this, too:

Can't wait to see what you make!

For the light skin, maybe this would suit your needs. I don't know if you tried it and didn't like the look of it, but I think it looks okay.

It would definitely look better with some tweaking. I think the problem with your original was that the shading took away from the redability, but the light color is too light by itself.
