Pixel Art / Game Sprites
« on: October 25, 2009, 06:16:26 am »
Alrighty then, so I posted a while ago with a sprite for a game. Well, the game got finished, with horrible graphics :P, and I started on a new one. Unfortunately, my tablet is broken, and I can't draw well with a mouse.... my paper sketches look a million times better, but I have no scanner lol. So, here is the first sprite for my new game, Flight. This is supposed to be a vine coming out of the ground which is holding an orb that is supposed to glow.... Couldn't figure out how to make it look like its glowing, and like I said, no tablet, no scanner.... this is like a 2 year old copied my sketch. Good thing I'm not being graded on my artwork lol. Still though, any feedback would be most appreciated.

Not sure, but maybe 40x40 is a lil too small, but in game everything will be blown up so we will see. C+C tear 'er apart!
More sprites are on the way...

EDIT
Updates :D

Life Orb Version 2.3 with updated palletes and other neato stuff!

Lamp o Doom!

I am trying to figure out how exactly to get those vines a little more noticeable... Also working on the tileset... which is my first one (and the technical side of it is driving me nuts  :blind: )

Need all the C+C I can get. Help meh! :P

Thanks in advance!

More Updates!

Been a bit, other classes are taking priority  :'( Got some extra time tonight though and started on my tileset... each piece is broken up into 40x40 and fits together... took a bit of work, not sure how naturally it fits, but I am proud nonetheless lol... on with the pictures!

One thing I'm wondering about is the mountain walls.. I'm getting the impression they are made from wood for some reason. It's a little because of the colour, but I think it's also the pattern on them, it reminds me of wood. Am I the only one who feels this? Look at the bottom of the mountain walls. The top (ie edges of grass) looks okay tho.

I was thinking the same thing actually. I believe it is the texture, and how the cliffs come over the top of the grass. I had the feeling that it was the top of a giant tree. Maybe some small tweaks and you could get that rocky feeling.

Most of those references are really unrealistic and bad. The "rust" reference is just metal recolored to be brown, and the concrete looks more like asphalt. I don't even know why he'd need ceramic tiles, either.

Yeah I know they are bad... I was just trying to give examples on what you can find :P I by no means said that they were great  :mean:

So has there been any update to this yet? Would love to see some progress pics.

The bars for health and ki could be a bit more dynamic. The dot representation is boring and overdone. You could make it a little more... for lack of a better term "Flashy" :P

Incorporate something from the anime into it. Right now the only thing that makes this  dbz related is the character sprites. Good work though.

The space background definitely improves readability. I think you could add a moon without distracting too much as long as it isn't too bright.

I was staring at a sketch of a robot I drew last night that looks like it could have been an exclamation point... ! (watching to much venture brother's lately I guess) and I suddenly pictured him rolling out on his little wheel at the end of a sentence and stopping, sucking in his arms and actually becoming an exclamation point...

Ok... so here is my idea for a pixel challenge... everyone could animate their names! And I mean like each letter comes out individually or all at once, not just moving text. Like someone could make each letter a robot that comes into the picture and stops to form a name, animals that are shaped like letters... etc.

Now that I actually read it it sounds crazy lol.... seemed much more doable in my head :P

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Cyberpunk Menu: Muscular System
« on: October 07, 2009, 12:41:45 am »
I like it quite a bit but there are some issues that I can see. Now I am no expert but the anatomy seems... off. The head bothers me a little, i think most of it is the ear. The ear seems a little to low and looks as though it is coming out of the neck... not sure if that is the problem or not. The face also bothers me a little. I think its the far side of the face on the other side of the nose... it seems squished forward a little more than it should be. Also the legs seem to bend to the right (his left) which seems very uncomfortable and unnatural. I think they could be straight without changing the feeling of the art.

Nice job on the muscle structure though. Wouldn't want to meet him in a dark ally :P

Oh and you may want to take everything I say with a grain of salt because as i said I am no expert... I'm barely a novice lol :D

Wow this looks fantastic. Only crit I have about the floor tiles (I am by no means an expert :P) is to maybe add a little detail. Compared to the foreground character they seem incredibly undetailed and bland. If they are metallic then you could add some highlights, if they are stone maybe add some crumbles or something. Right now they only have 4 off color pixels in each of the corners which suggests to me dull metal, with bolts on the ends. Maybe you could add some detail to that.

The robot looks amazing though. The little guy... or whatever it is :P... kind of looks like a washing machine.
