Pixel Art / Re: Game Sprites
« on: November 25, 2009, 07:57:11 pm »

Took Jad's advice and changed the pallete, added a couple extra tiles and stuff... Can't work on the art anymore because the assignment is due next week, but I do intend on working on the game after the class is over, and definitely work on the artwork...

Oh and here is a coin animation :D

*EDIT* Oh and I did take a good two hours creating a character sprite and started animating it.... but Graphics Gale stopped opening up my saves and corrupted any files that I saved with... so... bleh :(

Anyways, the red dot is going to be in the final project for class, but like I said I REALLY want to complete this game and make it work and be fun... My first venture into game design is turning out pretty well :D. Thanks for any feedback I may get, and for previous feedback... you guys ROCK

I believe your best bet is to stick with one thing at a time. If you keep trying to make more than one thing at a time you can lose focus very easily. One thing at a time :P, take the crits everyone is posting up here and actually utilize them... People aren't going to want to critique anything if you don't use them to your advantage.

Alrighty then, made the background, came out.... ok.... but the actual game is due in a week, so I started on the programming... the red square is the player (cute isn't he? :P)

This is a screenshot out of the actual game... lookin much better than I thought it even possibly could, so thanks guys.... Even though I haven't had much feedback, just being on the forums is very inspiring and helpful.

On to the screenshot! Its in 800x600 resolution, and looks pretty damn good.

EDIT: That little white stripe all the way at the right is because I accidentally enlarge the canvas... So ignore it :P

Looks pretty good, but it needs a pilot. Also, maybe some kind of proof of propulsion underneath; wavy lines, little blaster doohickies, maybe it doesnt even need that. Definately needs some sort of pilot, and something to spice it up a bit. Oh and before I forget, not sure if I am correct or not, but the reflection on the actual ship itself should probably move a little also, to convey the same depth that the dome does... When its not moving, the reflection looks like a white racing stripe :P. I likey though, the style is cute, but not overly cute as to induce huggable attack syndrome :P

EDIT: After rereading your first post, it seems that maybe the white racing stripe effect was intentional... in which case maybe use a different color other than pure white, maybe a extremely light red which may work better.... Super fast 2 second edit will be coming in a second to show what i mean :P

EDIT2: Took 5 minutes but meh, whatever :P

Also made the propulsion doohicky i was talking about, didnt turn out all that great, but I am sure you get what I was talking about, adds a little more flavor, and I am sure you could do much better :D

Lol, now that you mention it, I can't not notice it >.<

It's driving me nuts and I might just have to run through and do a lil palette change. Thanks for the advice.

Moving on to a background, still working on it, but I will have a wip posted up tonight or later tomorrow.

Sorry if I offended you, was just trying to say that you might be in a lil trouble :P

Anyways, on to the art, I am not sure that the balcony or the roof is in the right perspective. While everything else looks like a profile view that have been skewed to look like a top down view, the balconies and roofs of the buildings look like a true top down view. Not sure if I am nailing it or not, but something about the perspective is off. On a good note, everything is well detailed and easily readable. I especially like the cardboard boxes and the bookcases, lots of detail without getting lost in it. Good job :D

Once again, sorry for accusing you of theft, I jumped the gun a bit. Not trying to be rude or piss ya off, just trying to help :P

I think with it being darker it makes alot of the details that are lost in the lighter version "pop." It looks amazing and the character comes off a lot more masculine with the darker edit. Keep up the work, its coming out really good either way :)

this is really big and something pixel art's not really suited to, my first piece was a dither mess as well and i never finished.

im saying u shouldn't go overboard trying to create smoothness in big pieces for pixel art. and that doesn't go for everything of course, but for drawing a face, id suggest a more stylized approach, like that "leader of the blades" picture that was made quite some time ago. the piece itself is quite nice, but its just not a very good subject and/or size and/or approach for a pixel art piece. why not just use brushes and have a much nicer piece 100x faster? try to think of a piece that would be better suited to the medium. or you can continue on this and probably never finish.

Working with the limitations of pixel art is half the fun! Just because it's harder then loading up painter doesn't mean you should switch mediums... don't give up just cause its harder! lol. Besides, that looks pretty damn cool in my opinion.

On to the OP. It looks pretty good, but the nose seems like its floating on her face. I believe its the dark line at the bottom, but it may just be me lol. Also, she seems incredibly bored. Just layin there like that for no particular reason? A smirk, smile, half smile, wink, blush, grimace or any sort of expression would add much more character to your uh.... character :P Keep up the good work, can't wait to see a finished product :D

You guys need to take it easy on this  whole "stolen pixel witch hunt"  Not everything is malicious intent.
Do you really think I was trying to get away with something ? The edits were made on this exact same site lol, I don't think you guys are that stupid.

Either way yes I can see your point, and I should have had a disclaimer: I HAD HELP CREATING THE RED BRICK TILE AND RED BRICK ARCH TILE.
So yeah, I can see how posting it here with out a disclaimer is pretty much taking credit for it, but that was not my intent, I'm just not as active in the pixel art community and didn't realize how careful one needs to be about these kinds of things.

So, if you guys can find it in the bottom of your hears to forgive me I'd still like to get some C/C on everything.
Oh and by the way: Everything Other Than The Red Brick Arch And Red Brick Tile Was Made By Myself And Myself Only

Hey, no reason to be aggressive... in fact, not much of a right too. If your going to steal something don't get angry when you get caught. Did you ask permission of the person that made those tiles? Why not make your own arch and red brick tiles or at least use the original ones that were yours (if you are indeed Lucas :P)... No point in someone making edits or offering you advice if you are not even going to use your own art. And yes, I understand that some of it IS yours.... people here have a very strict moral viewpoint about theft of artwork, especially because it is just so easy to take a sprite, tack some colors and pixels on it, and pass it off as your own. It is my suggestion that you ditch the edit and put your own up, no matter how much better you think the one that isn't yours is. Edits are made to help you improve, not to steal or pass off as your own... now lets hope you read the whole post lol :D

The blue offers much more contrast which makes the piece pop, but I'm not sure that it would work with the background. Not to say that it wouldn't, it may, I am just not sure how. the face rendering looks amazing imo, but the red hat matches the skin tone though.
