General Discussion / Animation
« on: July 30, 2010, 09:16:03 pm »
Hello!

I have been pixelling a bit with an ancient version of Photoshop (6.0) and Grafx2... but they don't support animation,
so I am wondering if there is something similar and easy to use that I can download. Perhaps this belongs to another
section, but I couldn't find any that fits better.

I want to make games, so eventually I will have to learn how to animate my characters.

I would love to see this in a game with a parallax effect, i.e. the nearest trees scrolling slower than the far ones.

Wow, this is beautiful.

Perhaps the nearest branch on the detailed tree should be a bit darker near the top?
I also noticed that the grass is a bit "uniform". Perhaps you could darken it a bit in the part that is underneath the tree?
Perhaps it would add  to the atmosphere if some rays of light would shine through the treetops and hit the ground
as well? What about blinking eyes in the treetrunks in the background?

Thank you for all the feedback! I tried to get rid of those vertical lines... I couldn't find a way of making the hair/beard
particularly snarly. It's straight, but some of the lines are gone.

When it comes to lighting, I imagine that the light source is coming from the upper left corner. I just imagine it like that,
but if you think that giving the surroundings color would help, I will try that. I tried identifying some shapes, and I found some
triangles here and there... That's an interesting approach and I will keep it in the back of my head.

The smaller canvas example is quite clever, but then I would have to start all over. Maybe I should do that just in order
understand what I'm looking for?

I tried adding some lighter colors to the beard to give it that effect of "hairs" glistening in the light, but it looks like he's been
lying on his bed drinking milk or something.

You're certainly right that I need to learn about volumes. Everything I make ends up quite flat...
And on this one, this "improvement" resulted in me using a whole bunch of new colors...

Are there any good guides on how to make textures?  I want him to look more mossy, and I need
some texture or something for his beard.

About making an environment for him - maybe that would help, but I want this to be my avatar.

Hello. I've been trying to pixel without much success. This is my third attempt...

I always get stuck at this point, and I'm not sure what I can do to make it look good.

It's based upon the stone statue of Salasar Slytherin from the first Harry Potter movie:

Trying to make the letters look like ice:

It still looks like molten ice cream though.

This is how far I've come. I've been using the same colors as the image I posted...

At one point it nearly resembled some mossy rockish texture and then when I tried to do
that on purpose, it ended up looking like molten ice cream.

The only thing I'm happy with is the fact that I got rid of the anti-aliasing.

Cheers!

I see. Well, I was hoping for inspirational references such as this one:

I'll start working on it and post my progress here as I go along... hopefully
the pixelated letters will look better than the "generated" ones...
