Pixel Art / 8-Bit Yellow Devil From Megaman
« on: August 25, 2018, 11:13:24 am »
This is piece was supposed to be paired with a second sprite, but I focused so hard on the shading that I think I should post it and get better opinions before I end up going too far. The piece is designed to be just a little bigger than Megaman - he's scaled down to act as if he would be a playable character. Canvas: 37x32

The sprite is holding another character's fist (left out) and readying his other hand for a punch. I've tried to put the Yellow Devil in a stance to make it look like he's been pushed back from his opponent's force, thereby affecting his whole body.
I wanted to include more 'gelatin' shapes around his body, but I just simply didn't have the room for it. I'd already thought up shapes to make, but it'd clash with the outline and would make the sprite even more busy than it already is.

The back foot is meant to be crumbled and Yellow Devil has used his gelatin form to stop himself from falling over.
Also, the part in the middle is meant to be a anime-type fist mark. I don't think I've got it right, but I tried my best.

I was also using this 3D model as reference:

Pixel Art / I need advice on an abandoned sprite pose, please
« on: August 22, 2018, 06:43:20 am »
I'll post all the relevant images at the end for the sake of easy reading.

See, I wanted to make a boss sprite of a Digimon called IceDevimon in the style of Castlevania. The dimensions I gave myself was 58x58, so I had that to work with. I wanted him to be sitting in an Indian pose, but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out the correct pixel sequencing. I'm a horrible drawer, but I couldn't draw the pose, either. We're talking at the very least, 12 attempts at drawing it on paper, so I am trying to nail that down as well.

I tried to look for a visual reference and I thought of Dhalsim from Street Fighter, but he sits in a meditative pose, so it got me wondering, am I trying to make something that's not possible.

I'm not at all asking for someone to create this pose via pixel art. A simple "Yes it's possible, and here's why" explanation is good enough for me.

So, to further explain, here's some images:

Indian Pose:

In this pic of IceDevimon, he's bent on his knees, and I'm wondering if I should have gone with this pose for the legs:

Dhalsim:

I flipped the right image cuz I wanted the sprite to be facing the left to begin with. I also basically wanted that exact perspective, but with the Indian pose, but IceDevimon's legs were so long that I couldn't figure out how to do it.
I wanted to make the sprite for the sake of the challenge, but I'm clearly not ready for it yet.

Pixel Art / 8-Bit Pixel Art of Chun-Li
« on: August 12, 2018, 06:03:59 am »
I'm really happy with the result. I used a cosplayer's pose as reference and drew it in a 2D plain.

The cosplayer image:

Please tell me if there is anything I missed or shouldn't have done.

Pixel Art / Second MegaMan Legends Sprite [Feedback, please]
« on: August 11, 2018, 06:02:03 am »
Pretty happy with this sprite. The outlining around the left arm makes that section look dodgy, but I think I did a good job.
I just wanna know if the sprite has good body alignments and whether you can tell what's what with the sprite.
Would you deem this 'usable' in a top down shooter game?

Pixel Art / Feedback for MegaMan Legends NES Sprite
« on: August 09, 2018, 11:58:31 am »
I think I got this correct, but I'd really like critiques and feedback on whether I did a good job or not. The sprite was made using GraphicsGale on a 25x25 sheet. I never played NES games, but doing some level of research with run and gun NES sprites, I felt 25x25 was a fair pallet for a sprite.

I wanted to create a few top down shooter sprites, like the game Commando, or like the Contra Force sprite sheet of a character in the URL that I've provided.

The sprite I've created is meant to have MegaMan Volnutt aiming at the far right and ready to shoot and taking one step backwards to ready himself, but still using a 2D perspective. See, I wanted to make this sprite as a test first before I try and make more sprites.

Pixel Art / Please Critique My Pixel Art
« on: July 06, 2018, 11:13:14 am »
Hey. This is my second pixel art and it went terribly (LoL).
OK, so basically I wanted to redesign this Sonic The Hedgehog boss character as if Akira Toriyama drew it instead. After some time while drawing this, I realized this was a terrible idea, but I wanted to continue for the sake of experience.

My pixel art:

Pic I used for reference:
https://dragon-quest.org/images/2/21/DQII_Hunter_mech.png

I looked at a lot of images, so I did try. I had a really hard time forming the circular patterns and I refused to use the tools because I wanted to figure it out myself.

Once I realized how things were progressing, I decided to primarily focus on trying to create perspectives by using shading via the 'sunlight', which is supposed to be shinning above the character. I couldn't figure out a good color for Dr Eggman's head and I was getting very tired of this project, so I decided to focus on other parts. If it looks like I didn't know what angle to draw the character, you're right. I kept forgetting what it was, which is my own fault. I'll write it down in the future.

If it's hard to critique this kind of work, please tell me and I'll understand. But mostly I'm looking for critiques on shading and if I ended up making any jagged lines anywhere.

This design is missing arms, but I really want to move on to something else. I did the best I could with everything else.

Any advise or words  of wisdom will be copied into a Word document for reference :)

Oh, and I'll be doing simpler pixel art for a while now. I think I've learn't my lesson, LoL.

2D & 3D / Does Mega Man X4 use pixel art? [newb]
« on: June 26, 2018, 07:38:00 am »
Hey...uh...total newb question, and I don't trust my own judgement, let alone trying to find an answer for this question by Googling it. Reason why I'm not sure is because [while I can't think of other titles other than MMX] the 2D titles from the 32-bit generation looks amazing, even being able to create some kind of 'rounded' or dimension with the characters, and the thing that confuses me is, if this level of quality was available when the SNES was around, why wasn't it strong enough to maintain the pixel art?

So, below are sprites for X and the boss characters for you to have a look at. Are these sprites pixel art, so it be possible to reach this standard using a program like GraphicsGale, or were they created with more complicated means?

2D & 3D / Newb question about various 3D models
« on: June 20, 2018, 07:08:03 am »
I'd like to know how to make 3D character models like the Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES, but I don't what's what. Basically, I tried to do research on this and all I could find is talk about pre-rendered 3D backgrounds, created on the Silicon Graphics Indigo 2, apparently the character models were made with this too.

Do I need to have knowledge in computer programming or complex maths to make 3D models? Is there a modern user-friendly (newb) free program available for me?

This is a new question about the art of Legend of Mana.

It was when I saw an image like this from Legend of Mana that made me develop an interest in how beautiful pixel art can look and can be considered a painting (in my eyes) and this is the level that I really want to reach (excluding the 3D modelling, that's for a different idea) because I love SNES graphics. My question for this is, was the pixel art created with the tools used to make a SNES titles like Secret of Mana, for example, or was other tools involved, like some level of 3D effects, such as lighting or texture? Would I be able to reach this level of talent using just Graphics Gale, basically?

Please ask me to better explain myself if this sounds confusing. It took me a while to figure out how to explain the first question, which is why I needed to do research so I could use some sort of terminology.

Thanks :)

Pixel Art / Critique My First Completed Pixel Art
« on: May 13, 2018, 08:49:37 pm »
Hi, I'm Michael and I just signed up yesterday.

I want to become good enough to make SNES-level sprites, at least. So I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and read up on how to make pixel art and decided that I should start at the bottom - 8 bit. I went online and I found a fan-made Mega Man character to make an 8-bit design out of [1st image] and the result of me trying [2nd image]. The result is pretty funny to me. The end result looks like a friendly professional dancer that's about to challenge you to a dance-off.

Anyway, please critique away. If it's necessary, I can recall the several other Mega Man sprites I used as reference to help me with edges and whatnot.

General Discussion / How To Upload An Image
« on: May 13, 2018, 01:07:13 pm »
Hi, my name's Michael.

I just signed up and tried to make a post to critique my pixel art attempt, but I can't find a way to upload the PNG file.

I looked at the 'Help' section and the closest I got was reading this:

Do I have to wait 24 hours until I can post an image or something? I have no idea.
