Pixel Art / Link Portrait Remade
« on: April 19, 2007, 03:11:14 am »
It's been awhile since I've really pixelled anything, so I decided to look through my old "work" (crap) and try to improve an older piece. I hope I've succeeded:

any suggestions on how I could make it better?

I think it looks great. Reminds me of a resized 3d render (like in Diablo II)

His legs really need to show some movement in that idle animation. It's so weird to see his upper body moving so much and his lower body completely stationary.

would you mind posting your reference photo?

your work seems really messy and unrefined. You should take some time to clean up your lines instead of just drawing with the pencil tool.

The background looks too flat. It's really difficult to tell what's part of the wall and what's part of the floor. You need to add some sort of perspective to it.

looking great so far. Reminds me of Sonic and Knuckles.

Hawk: please, for all that is holy, ditch that beastly superiority complex of yours. Also, please stop posting that same mediocre work as an example. Instead, find a better sprite to give him an example of, but ALSO be sure to point out exactly why that sprite is better. Telling someone to basically emulate another sprite will never help. Tell them what's wrong, what they can improve, and tips on how to do so. Maybe even edit it to help illustrate your point. If you can't even do that, then maybe you should work on improving your own work, instead of sort-of trying to help others.

Dyuaru: I rather like the side view. I think that in the front view, however, you shouldn't have him twisting from side to side as he walks. It'd make more sense if he was running, but he really should have much side-to-side movement when walking. His body (and head) should be facing forwards all the time.

that's actually the character Din from the GBC game Zelda: Oracle of Seasons.

Here's a quick edit I did:

I desaturated the pants. I also upped the contrast all around, and added more shading to give him more depth. Also eliminated a color on both the shirt and pants.
