Pixel Art / (WIP) Knight Crab
« on: February 09, 2007, 12:39:14 am »
Yippy, WIPpy, WIPpy!

This is a crab enemy I'm working on for a project I'm doing... this won't be the actual sprite (the real sprite would be much smaller, unless I decide to make it a boss character or something), but once I started, I couldn't stop, and here it is:

I haven't done too much animating, and I'm planning on at least making a stance animation for this guy (blinking oddly, moving claws and body slightly) pretty soon...maybe a walk cycle, too.

Also, the bumpy texture on his claws is bugging me for some reason... I thought if I had added highlights, it would help, but it just made it worse...

I'm also planning on experimenting with some sel-out...

Crit away!

I'm having trouble rendering with the Maya Software option (as you can see in my earlier post), otherwise i'd just use that...

When I turn the AAing off in the main window, it seems to line everything up perfect, though. When i render, however, the Software Render messes things up, and I can't turn off the AAing in Hardware Renders....

Maybe Maya's just not the program to do this kind of stuff in...?

Any other Maya users out there?
I think all i haveto do is turn off anti-aliasing in the Maya Hardware Render settings... but as stupid as it sounds, i can't figure out how to do it! :(

I wasn't very interested in 3D until I saw AdamAtomic and kennethFejer's stuff... :)

To me, this lo-poly models with lo-res textures is like pixel art for 3D (not counting voxels, I guess).

It might not be pixel art once it is put to a plane, stretched and skewed, but I still consider it "pixel art" at least for the texture, and "low poly" for the model.

Anyway, I love this kinda stuff, and it's rekindled my recently waning interest in 3D programs...

Nice!

The only things bugging me are like you said, the BG stones are a bit bright, and the hearts are a bit big for me, and a little too bright, too...

Pixel Art / Re: -= THE COMET OF DESTINY =- -- 14 colors !!

That's crazy awesome!

The only thing that's kinda bugging me is the solid patches of yellow-orange around the white streaks... they kinda stick out more than the dithered areas... although I'm not sure how you'd change it.

Anyway, awesome work for only 15 colors! :D

EDIT: Okay, i think i see what's bugging me now:

The areas inside the blue look really blocky to me... I think just dithering them a bit would fix it up, though.

Also, the second-lightest white-orange color and the white-green colors are almost near invisible, and seem to just blend in with the solid white right now. I would darken the orange a tiny bit, and replace the light green completely with the same color in the flames and smoke. I'd change the green of the meteor to a different shade of green, as I couldn't see he color until I zoomed all the way in (might as well make it white/white-orange in its current state)

Hope that helps :) Again, awesome job!

Yes, I have Pixel Snapping on, made sure the grid was aligned pixel perfect, etc... I just don't get it, though...

Must be a Maya thing... I'm hoping it's just a render issue, because I'm almost positive it's not the UVs'...maybe I have to set the units to pixels? Who knows.

Guess this is just another reason to re-learn Max again...

I'm so tired of switching between the 2 programs... @_@ Everything i know how to do in on program i don't know how to do in the other.

Anyway, thanks!

Kenneth, you always make the best stuff! I love your style :D

I tried pixelling a 64x64 texture and tried putting it onto a cube just to test it out, but for some reason the pixels kept overlapping the edges on the cube by about 1 pixel... I don't get it :\ (I'm using Maya 7, btw).

I have my UVs set up perfectly, yet the results are are all messed up.

What gives? Are there any important settings I should turn on before rendering? Or are 3d programs/UVs not supposed to be pixel-perfect?

General Discussion / Re: pixel god video in MS Paint!

I can't get the video to run for some bizarre reason, but i saw his finished work.

By the looks of it, he just doesn't know enough about pixelling. The outline on most of it is a useless 2 px width, it is essentially a dumbed down Vector image, and the kicker is he saved it as a JPG (enemy format! :O ), making it all auto AA'd and gross.

After looking through his 5 years worth of works of wonky anatomy and 'Shopping, his subjects don't seem too varied.

And oddly enough, PixelGod only has one piece even remotely related to pixel art.

But, hey! You gotta trust the National Pick of collegehumor.com!

Ryudo's lineart Wario, using the palette from Wario Land 4.

The thing that's bugging me most is his arm, though...
