Pixel Art / Re: Samurai Champloo

Thanks for the critique and yeah I didn't put too much time into deciding a light source but I'll make sure to do that once I fix up the shading and get to work on making it better. As for the shirt its just supposed to be really loose but yeah I think I should add more detail to make it seems more realistic. I'll get to work as soon as I get back to my desktop, and again thanks for the critique and help  :D

Pixel Art / Re: Twisted visage.

The colors look wonderful in this piece and gives a nice wooden look to it almost as if it were a mask, really nice  :)
As to what the others said, if you were actually going for the wooden mask look then I don't think you'll need to smotth it out but if it were actually supposed to be an image of a human twisted face, then yeah perhaps smooth things down a little in parts of the areas that look kind of woden.

Good work, and I'd like to see you add a simple background to it, it would make this piece look twice as good in my opinion.

Pixel Art / Re: Entry for mobile challenge (Final Boss Updated)

The final boss looks a lot better now that its bigger. I really like the look of it, reminds me of the classics. The only suggestion that I have that hasn't been mentioned before is that I think the players ship is slightly big considering the size of the screen. In my opinion, if I were playing that game, then it would be very difficult because I don't have all that much room to move my ship away incoming lasers/missiles.

Other than that, looks really good, and I wish you luck in your competition  :)

Pixel Art / Samurai Champloo
« on: July 28, 2006, 07:25:32 pm »
Just finished watching the whole series of Samurai Champloo, which I recommend to anyone who likes interesting plotlines and samurais ;D!
Well I decided to stop work on one of my projects and create a Samurai Champloo pixel art of Mugen, one of the most interesting characters that I have ever seen. He does breakdance-like moves while he fights and has come close to dying like a million times but never seems to die.

Well now onto the pixel art. Its still not done, since I don't have much time to do this as I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow but I wanted to post it up to see what you guys think. This is my first time trying dithering so most of the dithering I did is probably incredibly inapropriate or not done correctly so I think I need some help on that. The anatomy might be slightly off but I did this with a fanart I found online as the reference, but yeah this is while he is motion of doing his breakdance-like whirlwind kick/kicks. One of the main problems I had with this is the face, I'm just not sure how to get it right. He's supposed to have a gruntled expression and I'm not really good with expressions on small pixel works as I usually do game art which usually doesn't show all that much expression. I got really lazing with the shading and didn't really complete it as you can easily tell :-X. I really want to get better at dithering as I really like the look of it in the pixel works that I have seen in this board. (ex: Tremulant, Helm, st0ven, and many more.)
C+C will be appreciated and I don't mind edits as I really need some help on this piece.

TakaM, I definitely gotta say this before I speak what I think about the sprite, your a lucky guy.
Anyway onto the sprite. I like the new lighting on it and it makes it alot brighter and gives it a bit more of a positive atmosphere. One thing that is bothering me is the neck which seems like its missing some crucial parts cause right now it just seems really long. Other than that its a very good portrait and I'm sure your girlfriend will be flattered  ;D

Wow the artwork for this game looks amazing. Of course, like the others, I agree that the first set is t best. The legs may be think but with the chibi-ish style keeps it looking good. Can't wait to see this game in action  ;D

Well look at it this way, everything that the others post on this forum are to help you out. They're not saying anything bad about your sprite but are just giving their own input on it, dont take it like they think everything is wrong with your sprite. Personally I think that Davids edit looks quite natural and a good basic standing pose and a bit more natural than yours since some parts of your sprite need work. (anatomy wise)
Its not bad and could turn out to be quite a good sprite once it is finished.

Looks like something from an FBI shooter.
Its looking really good, the shading on it is done really well and has a definite light source. His outfit looks quite casual-like and has that sort of FBI or government official in command type of feel.
The only thing I see slightly wrong with it are the legs which seem a little too long and kind of awkward due to the stance that he is in. The gun might also need a bit more detail, but other than that, great work  :)

Ah Zach that sprite comparison helps quite a bit, I didn't think about anatomy when I did it and just looked at some pictures to get a basic idea. I'll work on the neck and make it a bit more realistic.

And Kcilc thanks for helping me abit on the lighting and shading.
Thanks for the help, I'll work on an update as soon as I can.

Thanks for the tips on the shading, the newer shading on it looks much better. As for the face I was trying to get the thin face look and not the normal chubbier version of a face. Either way your edit helped so thanks!

Does anyone else see anything wrong with or something that should be changed on the sprite?
Or just advice?
