Pixel Art / 42x60 Android Mascot
« on: March 27, 2012, 12:19:24 am »
Can I get some help from you guys on the shading / have one of you run a quick edit or something? I made this today, trying to learn how to shade objects like the android mascot since I need it to perform another drawing I have pending and I don't know how to shade these types of objects properly. I also need to apply the chrome effect on it. All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Pixel Art / Re: 32x32 Grass design / colors / structure critique
« on: March 04, 2012, 06:50:16 am »
There are no glaring faults. It tiles decently well. It looks more like thick moss than grass to me, though. It's because you have so many globular highlights everywhere, packed so closely together. It looks very springy and mushy and thick, which is kind of cool, but not especially grass like.

I'd say more, but then I'd be spending more time on my critique than you did making it, which doesn't seem fair to me. Perhaps you would have found a better solution by yourself if you spent more time than the average smoke break making it? =P

Looking forward to the next update, though. Cheers! =)

Thanks for the critique. I will adjust the first tile and make it look more like grass. And yeah haha, I can do tiles pretty fast, though I will be spending more than the average time to make sure they look the best as far as my skill go. :D

You need to thin out those blades of grass. It looks more like vines with leaves on them.

Will do. Gonna post it on the next update.

Pixel Art / 32x32 Grass design / colors / structure critique
« on: March 04, 2012, 04:02:54 am »
Hi, I wanna know what's your take on this 32x32 tile I made. Let me know mostly about color choice / structure design and well any mistake I made and or that could improve it. Feel free to edit it as much as you want, also if you do a recolor, can you use the palette I'm using? I wanna see what colors make this better. Thanks.

General Discussion / I'm stuck, what do I do? what do I do!? haha
« on: March 02, 2012, 12:07:10 pm »
Hey everyone, it's been a while since I check out the community. I'm still a pixel artist haha, though I haven't done huge amounts of pixel art in the past months which have made me a victim of a certain common situation that I hope I learn more about it by sharing it with you all. Okay, you know how for example, you attempt to make a grass tile, and you fail and fail again... only then to find a tutorial about making grass tiles that you then read up and try again which ultimately allow you to get the grass tile done and past this obstacle... but then you have to make another grass tile and the same thing goes on, it just makes you question if there is something more than just studying tutorials that you need.

I have some art books that I'm down to studying to further my understanding of art, but my question is, is that what it's all about with pixel art? as someone who is still in that stage of say "learning the basic / intermediate / semi-advanced stuff"...? do I have to go read up a tutorial each and every single time I try something of new? (such as a grass tile which I consider mid level difficulty) Or can I just suck up a 300-400 page art book and bypass this practice? What do you do to get unstuck when stuck? and how did you learned to make all of these art assets, did you read art books? did you go to school? I have all these questions that I wanna know, to know if there is a better way of learning / practicing / studying than the way I do at this point, you know, to make things more effective in overall.

Thanks in advance.

Hahaha I laughed at the whole anti-aliasing thing and the whole pixelation having anti-aliased icons, I never really noticed! I should dump my current monitor and use one of these ones in here. I like the icon (same thing for the Pixelation ones), and yeah, looks much better than raw black.

Aside from the small mistakes made (most pointed out by the P.R.O.s here) this piece of work is amazing. Great work. I like the design style of this. Things should improve once you fix these small issues.

I'm sorry but you're wrong :P
This is a mock-up I made from tiles that I've made my self.

NOTE: If you actually right click the image and select properties it says 24-bit too, so, just saying..

By saying it's from various snes games you're giving me way too much credit :P
Also what's the point of doing that and then asking for criticism?

I'm not sure how to check the palette, though, but this image shouldn't have any extra colors other than the ones painted by hand.

Haha that was a test of integrity. Didn't meant to actually accuse you of stealing... if I did I would have hit the report button instead.  ;D Good work... a few twists here and there as you saw in the edit from Decroded and you're in the right direction!  :y: About the color problems... Charamaker1999 fixes this issue by selecting "scan colors used" which eliminates all of the extra colors from the image that aren't used... more like color defragmentation / cleanup. :)

@ AnnIshman =
The reason why the palette is "that" way is because this image seems to be assembled together piece by piece of what it seems to be ripped content from various snes-like games.

The image is first set up as 24bit colors so when each piece is pasted it won't lose any color, and then once all the pieces have been mashed together, it is decreased to 256 colors, and ta-da! it can be thrown inside programs that only support 256 colors, like cm1999 or used in old game making programs like Rpgmaker 2003. The browns you see there are just simply generated automatically by the computer.

@ Seiseki =
Hey, what's going on in here man? why are you using ripped content and not making your own?

Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: [WIP] Werewolf game sprites
« on: July 17, 2011, 09:01:34 am »
Hey, the game isn't bad... I was playing it for a bit just now, up until round 2 started then I stopped. I love the werewolf gameplay, the human not so much. Wish you could make it an option to be the werewolf only, 1 player and make it that you can go out killing and also eating humans haha. Either way, nice work, as far as pixel art, I like the map character styles.

Pixel Art / Re: 24x32 RPG character template / animations
« on: June 24, 2011, 01:31:27 am »
@ TripleM: I do put a lot of time, but been a little lazy lately cause of having other things to do haha. Anyways, thanks, and yes, these characters and the template is for a project I'm working on my own... now, question is if I will have enough time to get it done and released.  :-[

@ Knighty: Thanks for noting that, fixed. Here is the result...

@ Everyone who reads this and can give input:

Worked some more on some of the characters, and need some help with this other character... mainly on the up direction animation.

Also, check the main post, as I updated it and put up all the directions for this same character. I also deleted the bad animations from the photobucket account, so you'll see some blank squares on the earlier posts.
