Pixel Art / Re: Crazy Cat [WIP]

-- and when they say start from scratch, they don't mean abandon this project/thread and to pick another one - they mean to stay in this thread, stay focused on a cat, grab a reference (such as the two provided, or use a real life photo of a cat instead), work on that and see what you learn and show us, THEN see how you can re-imagine this existing 'crazy cat'.

Do it and it's rather likely you will wind up very happy with yourself.

Regardless of how horribly long it takes me to get pixel art done too, I'm hoping you'll turn out to be wrong on this, Evileye. It'd be wonderful if the other good artists hopped on here and demonstrated how they'd do what you're trying to do in less time - even if it's a little less 'spectacular'. I think everyone would appreciate any tips on how to save time pixelling. :)

I understand that in concept, but I'm not sure how that'd look. My current 22" widescreen LCD monitor says it has 92 DPI. Fully zoomed out, even a sprite in a 64x32 box is pretty small - I'm guessing that'd nearly half that size on an iPhone then.

Wow. Tiny.

Pixel Art / Re: looking for help

I've searched long and hard and have found nothing of the sort, unfortunately. The closest there is to one now (that I know of) is St0ven's post in my old thread Dr D linked to. My thread isn't 'dead' as such, I've just been working on other things slightly less insanely difficult...

The only other one I know of is one no longer available, by a chap called 'East'. He demonstrated copying and pasting a bunch of leaves as foliage and then shading appropriately.

There are, however, tutorials on drawing non-pixel trees, which are somewhat helpful.

If you find anything else, please let us know. :)

I never could navigate through them properly - required fiddling with the HTML link and guesswork last time I was there, for lack of knowing Japanese. I only know of the Famitus blog which has little graphics updates along the way - http://www.famitsu.com/blog/tkool/ :/

Trust the advice folk have given you. Most of us have said use a reference - several times. It's not about whether you LIKE it - it's about creating a foundation of knowledge to work on. I used to think I could just draw from ideas as well. It took me several years to figure out THAT was the reason I always felt like I was taking 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

Draw from what you see. Once our brains understand how to do that well, it has much more luck drawing what we THINK instead. You don't have to stop once you've drawn a reference picture - you can do all sorts of crazy stuff afterwards. The idea in your head is based on reality, after all - why shouldn't your crazy cat be based on something vaguely real, too?

It will help you. It will not kill your ideas. (Do it in this thread, too).

The closest images I've found to what you have there are:
http://nikipedia87.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/a033-cartoon-cat-clipart2.jpg and

Remember, your crazy cat can still be as unique as you want it to. Drawing from references is to help you - not confine you.

Golly. There are hundreds of Aussies. Thousands of Americans, sure, but hundreds of aussies. 103 of us in Melbourne, even. :D

Maybe the most success might be had if one was done in the UK - smallest region to travel in with biggest number of people (7k), vs California with only 1k.

Aw, still no Melbourne. Is there a tool around here somewhere that shows where most of us are from country wise? Might be easier to work things out that way. For all we know, 70% of members might be in Toledo.
