General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread

I saw Megan Fox recently in whatchamacallit, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, and then saw Transformers. It is probably the characters I've seen her as (people keep giving her the bitch to play?) or what, but for me she came off with no personal charisma - raw sex only. I really don't see why people compare her to Jolie - Jolie still comes across as very soft at points, even in her hard flicks.

Hoping the new fight scenes in Transformers 2 will be more readable than the last. I loved it til halfway through, then couldn't work out which robot was which for all the metal bits mashing together. And the ending, with Sam moving backwards away from whosname, his back towards wassname, then suddenly the camera angle changes and he twists around but you don't see him twisting and then he's doing something with his back towards whosname and facing wassname and you're going "Who did what now for why now!?" and walk out of the cinema thinking it was nonsensical self-sacrifice, not murder! @_@

2D & 3D / Re: Official Anatomy Thread

the leg i drew for Scribblette, occured to me that i should probably put my own advice up for critique if i'm going to stand by it and this is a pretty good place for that

*grins stupidly*

Aha! I have something! This anatomy book here states that there are TWO bones in the lower leg there, not one. Aren't I clever!

 :D

Okay, so he knew that already. :) For anyone who doesn't, from what I can see it's a combination of the two bones that has the fibula (a thinner bone on the outside of the leg) creating the bowing effect, which I think was what ND was demonstrating. The tibia itself curves only very, very slightly.

According to a text here on "congenital unilateral bowing of the tibia and fibula":
Bowing of tibia refers to bending of diaphysis with apex of curve directed anterolaterally, anteromedially or posteromedially. Posteromedial bowing
of tibia is a congenital condition often associated with calcaneovalgus deformity of ipsilateral foot. This condition undergoes spontaneous resolution to a major extent, often leaving only leg length inequality. The latter may result in abnormal gait and backache..."

Phtooie! i.e. if the fat bone is curvy instead of the skinny bone, you go owies and walk funny.

As far as planning out the body goes for miniature sprites, I doubt you'd need to focus on two bones instead of the combination...

General Discussion / Re: transparent PNG's
« on: June 24, 2009, 12:21:28 am »
I've been using Iaza as well. For some reason when I set the background to transparent in Graphics Gale and save it as a PNG, it just makes the background white. If I save as a GIF with transparency, the background remains whatever colour it was to start with.

I'll have to try adding an alpha channel, removing the background and then saving, and see if that does the trick... testing... okay, that DEFINITELY works. Hooray! :D

ProMotion can be VERY confusing to use, and I'm yet to figure out how 'index painting' can actually be useful. I've heard some reasons but haven't had luck putting it in action and actually saving time for quality.

I thought weapon as well. In fact, the area that looks like a bayonet (left) I thought could be something that sits aside the wrist of a mech, holding it as a gun and firing out past the fins via the 'propulsion' (right).

Regardless, I like the design. Instead of a glass dome, perhaps slits to indicate windows on the cockpit to help give some idea of scale. Is it a one man craft, or a thousand? If it's a small fighter drone, maybe it only docks in the mothership - how does it dock? Landing gear, or does it hook into something and remain suspended? What functions as weaponry? I can figure out the propulsion immediately, so that's good.

Tried sel-out on the legs to convey the form demonstrated in pictures, but indications are that level of detailed 'reality' requires reworking the entire structure to match and an entirely different sort of sprite, meaning I'd have to redo the male from scratch as well to fit. I went with a reference from a Loomis book where the legs were mostly together and tried to incorporate the shape from there instead.

According to my GF I shouldn't use her as a reference, and the nipples are meant to be one up and in - that looked wrong, so I went with just one up. The sprites I like are on either side of the X, longer torso vs longer calves. I'll get back to it tomorrow.

Robotacon, great silhouettes, but I can't seem to get the shoulders to work when actually shading, let alone find space for breasts. I'll have to go back to the sprites and rework them - the giant calves don't do the lass any favours. Your poses look decidely male and female.

I need a wav of Mathesar stating ONWARDS or whatever it is he says in that blind, perpetually optimistic Thermian way. :)

Also, I really like how the bottom-most tile is the girl, and everything seems to be flowing out of her head -- like they're all her ideas and such.

Great way for JJ naas to steal the thunder - I bet he knew what he was doing, too XD

I tease. That's one of my favorites. I love how BB turned her hair into a meal!

:)

I figured I should be taking a proper look through here too. Whole buncha saves to desktop for sorting already. That Loomis link is super (hey, the lass there has her legs together! )

Pixel Art / Re: WIP BG; Snowy forest [Requiem] - alternatively: TREES
« on: June 23, 2009, 08:20:36 am »
It doesn't look yellow to anyone else, I believe. Regular colour here. That aside, I think folk are able to set up the forums to have various colours as the background, so you can't really control what happens there.

Regarding the trees, the fore-ground one has lots of character partly for its wilted/knotted grasping at the sky - the middle tree may be too straight for your design. I probably wouldn't have so thick a top, either, as it looks like a much taller (and very straight) tree that has had the top broken off. Instead perhaps thicken the branches and give it the same twisted character as the tree in front, giving the tree more opportunity to loom?

Pixel Art / Re: [nudity, WIP, spritework] Yarble yarble. Yarble?

That settles it. I'm pulling out my GF's anatomy book tonight and I'm sketching the entire body. Every bone. Well, except for the little ones in the ears, and I expect it to take a while... and then I'll make a pixel skeleton at this size, just to see how it goes. No more expecting ANY of this to be easier-than-full-blown-vector-art or time saving, especially when the months I wasted learning to sprite I could've spent learning to draw regular and sprited the same much quicker.

And then I'm going to have to do the same with muscle groups.

Not sure how to incorporate learning about colour in there to help with things like doing tree leaves better, but that's another story...

Thanks for the input ND. It helps break down what I couldn't see in online photographs with little light/dark contrast to make anything out. I can see the male leg needs work as well then - I was just a bit luckier there. Can also see that if I want to do legs at the current width scale, I'll likely need to increase the sprite size overall. Legs are tiny!

Work continues - better. :)

HI JJNAAS I FIXED YOUR AVATAR

That's awesome. The least I can do is return the favor:

These two made me laugh-snort-cry and should be immortalized somewhere. Also we finally have an Xbox360 of our own with GoW 1&2. Same username as here. Feel free to pwn me, but if my Su is playing too be sure to fall down and pretend she got you or she'll stop playing with me, and whatever you do don't run away - or move around much, she still gets dizzy watching FPS games. >_<

Also HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Opacus - but what landmark birthday comes after 18 with more liberties when he's already got booze & cars? A mid-life crisis one someplace?
