Pixel Art / Beholder fo' fun
« on: July 22, 2009, 11:54:22 pm »
It's my first pixel art in a while and I haven't been on this forum in forever.

I love the emoticons. :D :mean: ::) :-X So great.

Anyway here's my beholder. I don't want to spend more time on it (it was just for fun) but I would still appreciate criticism because I might learn from it!

---------------------------------
I think it looks too flat. I think I need to either work bigger or not try to cram in so much detail.

(Each eye has a different colour, even though you can't really see it. Yep, it's pointless.)

My knee-jerk reaction is not enough contrast, too many midtones.

It matches a particular style of super-smooth pixel art but that doesn't seem to be what you want. I think you focused too much on smoothing and not enough on definition of forms and details, e.g. the shading on the pants is really nothing more than a circular gradient.

The face looks really flat at 1x. Try using some bold shading to really define the face so it's noticeable at 1x. First boldly bring out the form, then smooth it if necessary.

The gun gradient is pointless and unrealistic. See if you can find a place to add some cool detail on it, and consider that it could probably look just as detailed with as few as 3 colours.

Maybe add folds to the pants.

Less gradient, more detail!

Emoticon!

Consider making the character himself more interesting, as it's very "vanilla" right now.

To show off the run cycle, make sure you can link an animated version.

This is my first post on here in a while please don't ban me.

Well, that's helpful. Thanks. I agree about the tiles being too small and "grainy". They really don't fit the style I was going for. :blind: I guess I will just have to come back to this topic once I've done some more work. : P

Thanks for replying,

I don't know what you mean with your second comment. In reply to the question, yep the character's meant to be standing at an angle because it just looks better. :P Once I get some edges done for the ground they'll be angled like the ground-edges in Donkey Kong Country and Battletoads.

Pixel Art / Platform Action-RPG graphics - seeking help (wip)
« on: July 03, 2007, 11:22:30 pm »
Hi

I'm working on making an action RPG game and I really want the graphics to be as great as I can make them. So far I've made some grass tiles, and one of the main characters.
Tiles:

Character:
As you can see I have started working on a run animation for this character. That is one thing I am particularly unsure about and would really like help with. Should I add more frames? Is it bad how much her leg kicks forward (and how can I fix it)?
I have a semi-animated version of the sprite here for anyone that has a gif program handy to look at it: (unfortunately all I have for animation is Game Maker and the very clumsy UnFREEz).
(The image only animates once.)

All sorts of comments are appreciated but what I'm really looking for is edits and criticism to help me improve the graphics and the graphical style of the game. Things I'm especially concerned about are the run animation and making the girl's head and face look right. I plan to post all the graphics I do for the game here, until I'm satisfied that I know what I'm doing. :P Thanks for looking!

...I love this place. :D

I have made an edit (a total redo of the colouring actually!), trying to follow those comments to the best of my ability. He is now daemon-powered or something, and, imo, much cooler-looking (as well as better technically).

A few comments, I did not know how to implement: Morganne, I'm not sure what you mean that the grip on the knife is too loose to wield it. I also don't know how I would go about improving that. And baccaman, I'm not sure I got what you meant by aliasing the edges cleaner. I tried to do it, but I'm not sure I even knew what it was. :-[

Thanks for the comments so far and any more input from anybody would be great. I don't know how to tell when he's done, so... if he is, someone please tell me. :P

Pixel Art / WIP ninja-type guy... please help

Edit 1:

Original text:

I was hoping to make a nice, neat, cool-looking fantasy character, then animate him. It's... not working out so well.

This is my biggest and "best" version of him so far:

I know there is something very wrong with it, but I just can't figure out what it is. The pose seems bad somehow, but I can't figure how to improve it. I'm not sure I like how skinny he is, but again, don't know what to do. I'm kinda lost.
I do like some things about this picture, but it hasn't yet reached what I was trying to accomplish.

What I'd like is advice on how to improve him. Advice on any aspect of the picture is very welcome, but pose and colouring are my 2 big ones. Edits would be very appreciated!

My previous efforts at rendering the same character:

A good way to get inspiration is to go in the activities/challenges section of this forum, or another forum. I've done that a few times now.

now.
