ah , thanks for the reply . honestly it is a bit disappointing , i thought pixel art was all about placing down each pixel , guess just like with everything in the game dev pipeline , such things must be used for faster development and it would be faster in most cases since there are ways to reduce bit depth and somewhat auto clean up shrunk art aswell . but then it make me wonder why people are criticized if they use these methods nowadays to make pixel art.

so i was showing some of the sprites to some of my artist coworkers and they told me that many of the backgrounds used scaled down images that were then cleaned up , this sort of opened my eyes because i used to think everything in games like metal slug was made from scratch , pixel by pixel . my boss has been in the gaming industry for the past 20+ years and has worked on some old school titles . he was the first one to let me know that these were clearly scaled down images since the perspective was all wrong in the first place and everything else such as the rendering on the objects were different from the rest of the art .he told me this used to be a common practice back in the day. do let me know what you guys think about this . was this common knowledge to everyone in the community?

hi thanks for the reply , so the entire thing is somewhat in the middle , for the background i wanted it to blend in , while the character and the flame look like sprites that were separate from it , also it is not a charter from the movies etc , it was someone's custom trooper

Had'nt posted in a while , please help me find out everything that is wrong with it? The pallette,  where I shouldve used desaturated colors for AA etc . How can I improve my color ramps or even make a good one . I mainly follow metal slug , so generally for me , it is saturated with dark colors and desat with light , then same with objects in the back , more desaturation basically.  For the character sprite I intentionally did not want him blending in , was trying to get the feel of how normal game sprites did not get affected by the background elements and popped out . Also I am aware that there is a lack of highlight with warm hues from the flames on the surrounding objects . Couldnt do it due to time constraints

i see , i guess it was stretched lol .thanks alot for the edit , ill save it for future reference aswell . yeah hue shifting is a pretty important part of color theory ,although i guess traditional artists probably have a different term for it , so i dont consider it a stylistic choice. the only thing that's on my mind is to not get too deep into saturated purples with darker areas like i see alot of pixel artists doing ,cuz i dont see that level of contrast in the stuff we see in real life,it's a bit more subtle .The only thing from metal slug that i would like to not follow is the complete black borders on their sprites. im trying to learn how to do selective AA but cant get it down yet. for backgrounds ive been doing master studies of ,you guessed it , metal slug , but that is much more forgiving since we dont treat them like sprites.Anyway , thanks again :D

here you go and yes please edit it and show me how to remove this banding , ive never really made portraits in pixel art so this was my first try , i know i was messing up but didnt know how to remove the banding , if id try to remove pixels it would look in complete and if id add different hues from the palette it would still look weird , so yes please, show me how to remove the banding . and as far as the hue shifting goes , i am aware of the kind of hue shifting being done by alot of pixel artists where they'd go towards the purples , but when i tried to find it in the pixel art done by the artists at nazca (snk) i did not see that level of hue shifting , so i myself try to stay away from it as im trying to follow them . and would the jacket being more desat help?

Hey guys , been doing pixel art for a while now, doing it somewhat semi professionally. Never really joined communities ,so wanted to try out here and see what you guys think about my art . I am well acquainted with things like hue shifting etc . been an artist for years , now just want to focus on pixel art and get to the level of artwork done by the guy who worked on the first 3 metal slugs and the other masters of pixel art at snk . let me know what you guys think . will be posting here frequently
