Pixel Art / Experimentation with dithering. Any thoughts/criticism?

Since I hardly ever use dithering I decided to dedicate one piece to it. So I had fun with it.
As to the piece itself it's a heart-shaped gear for today's entry of pixel dailies.

I personally think you're using too many colours for the stump, you could just settle with 3 really. Also you shaded the snail's shell so it looks a little off that you didn't shade him too. And that purple is really saturated you might want to lower that a little

If making the highlight lighter doesn't work for you, have you tried making the shading tone darker?
