Yeah, too many colors tends to muddy things up.  Sort of less is more with pixel art.  Plus it makes pixeling easier when a limited palette is used, esp when animating, as you can imagine.

Some ideas...


Watch your color count.  You had a lot that were redundant...meaning they were so close to each other you couldn't tell them apart.  Your first version had 43 colors.  My edit has 10.

And more contrast helps too. 

All of this is very common with new pixel artists.

Very good first attempt though.   :y:

For a small simple game, I like it.  The animations are quite nice esp the archer.  Everything seems to fit background wise.  My first though was, the foreground trees could be bigger, but that would get in the way of the animations.  Unless you make the trees into sprites and place them randomly and have some layering going on.
Also, it looks like you have different scaling between the background, hud and the sprites.  Making the background and hud the same scaling as the sprites would look better I think.  In some of the games I make,  I scale everything up except for the fonts, only for better readability.
As with any game dev, it's a matter of how far you want to take it.

It seems like your light blue lines are adding to the complexity, which is fine.  But, just think about how simple it could be without them.

eishiya makes a good point about a visible floor.

Generally, I wouldn't think a "wall" in a "wall tile" would take up the a whole tile.

eishiya is correct about the colors.  Some of the colors put next to each other, you can't tell apart.  Keep it simple at first.  Using maybe 3 for the skin and 3 for the hair.  It makes it easier to learn about the color values needed.  You can do a lot with just a few colors.
In my edit, I removed a bunch of redundant colors and focused more on the shape of the face and eyes.   Hope this helps. 


You're making a nice improvement though.  Keep it up.   :)

Based upon the bases they're standing on, you wouldn't even see a neck.  Sort of a semi top-down view.  These are very cute though.   :)
