Pixel Art / Homestuck Art Dump
« on: November 02, 2010, 06:39:26 am »
So I don't know how many of you follow Homestuck, but recently there was a flash update that required the art team to pump out quite a lot of pixelart.

These are the segments I made. I wasn't really a fan of the whole "Earthbound" look that was agreed upon in my absense (I stand alone on the whole art team in not liking that game |D) but I still had a huge amount of fun working on these sprites. Enjoy!

Pixel Art / Never-ending ownage
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:55:49 pm »
Okay, so I basically worked all day on this image and figured I should show it here on the forums.

At the advice of a couple people here on the forums after my last postings, I decided to finally up the ante a bit and go for more of a Super Nintendo look. I've been studying the snapshots I've taken from various games over the years and now that I have played around enough with pixels just for fun, I finally have the fundamentals in place to understand what in the name of shitsticks the Artists of Old were actually doing.

I tried sticking to three-to-five shades per colour, with an overall fairly limited pallette, and the background was inspired by a few games such as Demon's Crest and some detailed RPG overworld backgrounds.

The animation could be a little more complex but I deliberately wanted to go for a bit of a low-tech feel and also this is for a project that is really more about speed than quality, so I'll cut you all to the chase by saying I could have added in a lot more in-betweens on the Knight's movement.

Hope you guys enjoy it!  ;D

Pixel Art / Some various stuff from my project
« on: June 08, 2010, 08:22:12 am »
Just bits and bobs from my Choose Your Own Adventure, various examples of pixelart I've worked into it.

There's a lot of those weird two-frame gifs - it comes with the territory.
Hope you guys get some level of enjoyment from them.

Edit: Might as well squeeze in another one I'm quite fond of:

General Discussion / GraphicsGale exporting transparency improperly
« on: March 22, 2010, 08:06:14 am »
I feel the need to post a "god help me" thread here because I've been pulling my hair out over this one for some time now.
The long and short of it is that GraphicsGale (I am using the full licensed edition, version 1.93.12) is saving animated gifs with transparent backgrounds in an awful stacked formation, producing such horrorible oddities as this:

When in fact, the sequence of frames is this:

The short term solution I tried was doing away with transparency entirely and just filling the back with a junk colour and making that the transparency colour manually in ImageReady, but this is a whole extra step that is cumbersome and time consuming, and sometimes doesn't even work, adding more to my frustration.

The fact that I like GraphicsGale and intend to keep using it doesn't help either. PLEASE tell me there is a solution to this problem that I have somehow missed.

Pixel Art / Deep Blues Gang lineup
« on: March 08, 2010, 08:46:21 pm »

Just a little something I whipped up in GraphicsGale. These characters will eventually be animated.
No doubt you can tell I was feeling more confident with every subsequent sprite, they are shown in chronological order of completion.

If you're wondering, the Deep Blues Gang is a small mob of gangsters who are also chess nerds. Each character is based off a chess piece. From left to right, they are Elvis Gloom, Victor Hedwig, Jean-Baptiste, Castello, Bauer and Art Galahad.

General Discussion / What software do you use?
« on: March 07, 2010, 05:54:27 pm »
Apologies if this is in the wrong section, but I've been getting back into Pixelart again quite intensely lately, and I've been running into some problems with the software I use.

Primarily I use Photoshop CS2 which for the most part works perfectly. Annoyingly, however, it seems to be really, really inconsistent with registering clicks from my Intuos tablet, meaning that stippling pixel shading is virtually impossible, and even the simple chore of drawing lines is unpredictable and messy as the pixels aren't actually appearing.

I moved onto SAI and found it to be an extremely powerful and capable tool when creating pixelart, but unfortunately the one limitation I found with it was the most crippling - the eraser has no option whatsoever for disabling anti-aliasing. There is no efficient way to "rub something out".

I then moved to The Gimp out of desperation and spent nearly half an hour just trying to figure out the tools and found it to be equally confusing and limiting.

I'm at my wit's end here because I have no intention of slowing down in my pixelling, but my software is seriously getting in the way of productivity! :yell: What do you guys use? And if you use the same programs as me, how do you circumnavigate these irritating shortcomings??

Thanks in advance.

Pixel Art / WIP - One tiny little block of pixelart
« on: December 22, 2008, 03:09:22 am »
Okay, so inspired by some of the huge collabs here, one of my friends decided to start an IsoCollab of her own, but because she didn't know how many folks would participate, she decided to do a puny one to start off with to gauge how popular it was.

I decided to lend a hand as I'm way out of practice with my pixelart, and could use an excuse to hone my skills before participating in one of the real deals here.

So far, I'm happy with it, but I noticed I went a bit trigger-happy with the pallette. That's one thing I need to improve on, colour conservation, so if anyone has any tips that would be great.

The other thing that is really, REALLY bothering me is the stream of liquid. I can't figure out how to make it look... not... crap.
Here's a bigger picture for your convenience.

Any and all critique is welcome. Thanks, guys.
