Pixel Art / Re: [wip] Chickens (TitleScreen for a game)
« on: June 10, 2007, 05:01:31 pm »
It's been almost three months since my last update and I just felt like letting everyone know that I'm working on it still(again :P). (See edited first post.)
[edit]Added a progress animation to the first post.[/edit]

Very nice. I used your edit as a reference and updated my version appropriately(see modified opening post). The duck does really look more ducklike now. I still have to work on the arm and hands of the chicken again though, as it looks not very satisfactionary to me.

I don't know about the chickens feet in the back following the perspective, because they are so tiny, it might not work. Horizontal line will translate more smoothly into the hills when I get to coloring, but for now, I'll keep it and:

Hope that this is helpful. Post came a bit late, i know :)
Yes. Thanks a lot, it is very helpful indeed and regarding it coming "a bit late", no problem, absolutely no problem, your time is probably as scarce as mine, so again thanks for taking some of that time to help me. Besides, I don't believe in speed(see my sig). ;D

What's next? Well, I showed Andrei this thread and he suggested these things, which I'll work on next (after fixing the currently bad hand and arm of the chicken in the front):
  • There should be more pipes. Chickens is a game about junctions of
pipes. There should be at least one pipe-interchange visible. One good
place to add more pipes would be the inside of the barn (eg. the black
bit above the haystack. Another place to add pipes is the bit towards
the back just before it becomes a hill. Drawing pipes in the distance
means you don't need to worry too much about the detail.
  • Two dancing chickens dancing with eachother near the chicken-party
  • Perhaps more instrument-playing Chickens. Johan(is making music for the game) could suggest which instruments to use. One possible instrument is a double-bass.
  • There should be an extra dive-bombing duck just behind the one
carrying an egg. Of course, it is OK to clone the downward-diving duck
    to save you some time.

Not sure, where I will insert the dancing chickens or the additional instruments as there isn't that much room left to fill, but I'll see... (maybe the double bass chickens could sit on the barn).

Btw, the game itself is freeware and you can download the current version from the page, linked to in the opening post, if you're interested in it.

General Discussion / Re: Official Pixelation Off-Topic Thread

Hm, actually Bruce was born in the USA, no idea about which characters are appropriate, since well, I know that's Bruce Lee there on the banner but I think "way of the pixel" is so generic it doesn't necessarily have to be associated to Bruce Lee, so in my opinion it would be ok to use those characters I suggested originally.

totally off-topic for this thread, but I didn't feel like spamming the board with a new thread for this:

I for one would find it extremely cool, if in the banner at the top, "way of the pixel" would also be written in kanji. That being said, the kanji for pixel(gaso) can be found as number 2124 on this page and the kanji for do(way) is on wikipedia.
(cookies go to entheh of allegro.cc for helping me to find that information)

I found another fine tool to record screen activity, which is called CamStudio and it is opensource.

When I started with recording my drawing practices, I used AutoScreenRecorder but quickly found one very big flaw in it: it was impossible to set the temporary directory for recording, so if you had little drive space available on c:\ it would force you to make a pause every n minutes (when recording to uncompressed MSVFW1.0 codec (in my case, I only had 1GB available on c: and had to pause every 30 minutes))

CamStudio can set the temporary file directory to anywhere you want and I'm currently using it to record the full progress of the Chickens Title Screen (it's already 760MB of recompressed DivX video data, no sound) and I'm very pleased by the performance.
To cut, combine and recompress the different recorded sessions, I'm using VirtualDub.

Pixel Art / Re: Kinda nice mirrored portrait =D
« on: March 17, 2007, 07:28:03 pm »
Something suggests that the face is seen from an angle and yet something else suggests it is seen from the front. I'm not sure what it is though. Maybe the lighting and shading and the positioning of the pupils or the shape of the eyes... maybe someone else can tell, I can't, all I see is that it looks kind of strange.

The pixels themselves and the dithering is all well. I'd maybe darken the backdrop to separate it from the facial color and also shade it more aggressively (more contrast, darker shadows, also on the sides to give some depth). That's all just in theory though, I don't know if I could pull off those changes, so please take this just as a suggestion by someone who is himself still learning.

Pixel Art / Re: Some type of guardian dude?

You can still AA it, even if you plan to use it in a game. As long as you only AA pixels on the inside(the inside includes every pixel that doesn't directly have a pixel of the backdrop next to it) it should be no problem to put this on different backdrops.

Not sure if the red dots are both meant to be eyes or if the lower one should be a mouth. If it's a mouth, I think it would benefit from different colors than the eye or maybe a position and shape change would also bring it out more clearly as a mouth.

The orange color makes it look like it's made of rusted metal to me, rather than wood and I see the green as some kind of moss (like the stuff found on some trees). I like it.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] New Avatar
« on: March 15, 2007, 09:22:32 pm »
That's too much animation/movement for an avatar and can get somewhat disturbing when having to view it all the time, while reading a thread. That's just my opinion though.

As for crits on how to improve the piece itself:
I'd not just mirror the frames but also change their shading, so that the lightsource stays the same all the time and doesn't suddenly warp over to the other side.

Pixel Art / Re: Iso Room and Sprite
« on: March 14, 2007, 12:33:55 pm »
Nice for a first iso piece.

I don't know if the furniture standing a bit away from the walls is intentional but to me that looks strange, especially on the bookshelf. On the table though, I think one of the legs(to the extreme right) is too short. You can see that for yourself if you draw a line from the front leg, parallel to the floor line on the right, towards that leg that I think is too short. Extend it until it hits that helping line and it should be alright. You can also fix the wrongly positioned gripe on the right door of the bookshelf by doing that line trick. (Using helping lines like that is generally a nice trick to find the correct positions of things in iso drawings.)

To make the overall appearence of the room more interesting, my only suggestion is to add some texture to the bed and maybe to the walls. And then, what has already been said, add shadows and more detail. Keep going.
