Pixel Art / Violetblight Quarry
« on: April 05, 2013, 03:54:08 am »
I'm not really sure if I should post this here or in low-spec, since it has a 3D aspect... but the focus of this project is definitely the pixel art, so I'm guessing pixel board.

So I realized I still haven't done any tilesets, which I decided to fix with a little mineshaft area. Each tile is put on a square plane in 3DS max for now, I might put a little game together in Unity when it's all done though.

For the record, it's supposed to be more of a stylized rock, like Basalt, only sideways, if that makes sense.

Floor tiles:

Wall tile:

Right now I'm a little worried that either
A) I'm overdoing it with all the little details, and
B) the details I have now don't do enough to imply form.

I do feel pretty good about my color choices though, but I'm sure someone here can still tell me off about that, haha.

Anyway, here's what it looks like in 3D:

And the floor without the walls:

I know that right now the wall is too repetitive, I'll work on another tile or two to break it up. I also did a little chest on the side.

I'm pretty sure the color choices (warm vs cool) do enough to make the chest pop from the background (especially with the orange gem), but lemme know if you think it could use more work. :D

2D & 3D / Wadsworth Zane

Making some fan art for Broodhollow. Overall I'm pretty happy with the model and the texture, but there's one thing bugging me like crazy.

That goddamn bandage. There has got to be a better way to texture it, but at this resolution it's all ugly and grid-showing. I've tried antialiasing it, but that tends not to work so well for me when pixels are wrapped around a model.  :-X

I'm considering just giving in and rotating it to be in line with the grid so I don't have these issues, but I figured I'd ask around here for advice first. Any takers?  ;D

Pixel Art / Over the Moon
« on: February 06, 2013, 06:46:29 am »
Wanted to make something fun for my 2 year old, and he loves the moon, so this seemed the logical choice.

This is my first attempt at two lightsources (or chromatic shadows, or whatever you call it), so help me tear this apart. Not terribly sure about the entire palette, actually. I'm all for reusing colors, but I'm worried the cow and moon share too much. Thoughts?

Pixel Art / Tsoukalicious

Guess I've been on a portrait kick lately, but there's something so satisfying about the final result.

Reference: http://i.imgflip.com/26am.jpg

Known issues:
- My palette is in need of serious work, but I'm finding it difficult to pick colors with such a strange range of hues to represent. Any help on that front would be super awesome.
-The hands are atrocious, especially the right (his left).
- I've got some banding going on that I'm not sure how to fix (if it's worth fixing), mostly on the far right jacket highlight and near the tie.
-The hair hasn't been refined too much yet

But please, rip it apart! If you can find another problem I haven't spotted, I'd love to know.

Pixel Art / Self Portrait
« on: December 16, 2012, 06:27:44 pm »

Just a simple portrait for a blog icon. :D  I think I've been looking at it too long, it's become difficult to find the errors (and I know it's full of 'em.)

My pretty face for reference:

My biggest issue right now is trying to get the very slight smile to read as one. Right now it looks like I'm grumpy, or concerned. I'm considering taking a new photo with a more exaggerated expression and starting over if I can't get this right.

Intended to be viewed at 2x, by the way.

Edit: Decided to just bump it to 100x100, instead of scaling up the 50x50. Ordinarily I'd be nervous about working on a piece of this size given my current skill level, but I figured it was time to raise my expectations and maybe learn something. :)

(there's still a lot of doublepixels going on- haven't  refined much besides the nose and eyes yet)

Edit2:

Edit3:

Progress gif, because they're fun!

Current:

Edit4:
I'm probably being a bit ridiculous with all the edits, but I'm actually willing to call this one done, unless anyone has anything to add?

General Discussion / Multiple images, one palette?
« on: October 16, 2012, 09:35:08 pm »
I'm trying to get a unified palette for a bunch of different images I'm working on, and I stupidly didn't try to set one up before I started. (Mostly because I'm not limited to any number of colors, I just want to keep it as low as possible)

Is there a way to easily grab palettes from multiple images in Graphics Gale, or am I just kidding myself that I'll find a way besides paint filling everything by hand?  :'(

Pixel Art / Help with water animation D:
« on: May 29, 2012, 05:29:44 pm »
I'm trying to work on the water for the game I'm making in school right now, but it's occurred to me that I have no idea what I'm doing. I've tried referencing real rivers and looking to other pixel artists for inspiration, but this is the best I could come up with:

I probably need more than 4 frames (right now it's 1-2-3-2-), but adding frames won't help me much if I don't know how to make even these look good. :/

Crits/advice much appreciated! :D

2D & 3D / Lowpoly Charon
« on: May 17, 2012, 07:13:34 pm »
In my game design course right now we’re making a “retro” themed game. I talked my group into going for a lowpoly style with pixel graphics. Our idea was to make a game where you play as Charon ferrying souls across the River Styx (think like Frogger, but back and forth with a time limit). As it stands, this is the main character of our game:

(boat not pictured)
He’s sitting at 121 polys with a 32x32 texture (8 colors). I’m actually rather proud of this piece, as my pixel stuff is usually lacking on its own. :D

My main issue with it is the area around the sides of the skull where the geometry comes to a point. I can’t seem to find a way to make the pixels there not look incredibly awkward. Even if I did, I’m not sure exactly how I’d fake the lighting in that area anyway. :/
All crits are welcome though! I’m eager to improve; this style has me positively hooked.

Pixel Art / Monster Girl
« on: June 23, 2009, 07:30:29 pm »

Been a while since I did any pixel art, so I tried my hand at this girl, a character of a friend of mine. She was boring by herself, so I added some mushrooms, and may have gotten carried away..

I know the shading is wonky on some parts, but I fear I've been staring at it too long to pick out where. This is also my first real attempt at AA, and I think it worked out nicely. Admittedly, I'm pretty sure I over-AA'd parts of the girl... I'm not sure how to make the stitches on her eye look like stitches without adding all those shades.

I don't usually work with a set palette, which in this case resulted in way too many colors. Any help reducing that would be greatly appreciated. :y:

Pixel Art / Avatars!
« on: March 03, 2009, 03:32:12 am »
..But not the Jad kind. XD

Trying to make a simple headshot avatar for a friend of mine, and hopefully three more when it's done.

Here's the reference:

I was trying to go with a monochrome palette. It was just good luck that I found a pic already like that, I guess. XD

Anyway, the issues I'm having:
-The face looks too man-like
-No idea where to go with the hair
-worst problem is probably the nose area, dunno how to fix it

Oh, and it's four colors. I'm considering adding pure black and/or white, though. Not sure if such a restricted palette is a good idea for such a novice. Thoughts?
