Pixel Art / It's a Boat!
« on: May 19, 2020, 02:28:48 am »

I have a boat which recently became fairly central to the game I'm working on so I figured I should put some more time into it. It's mostly flat colors and it certainly works for playtesting but I'm wondering if adding texture would be a good idea. I tried it and it distracted from the characters walking around.

The empty shelf will eventually be full of things, and the specifics of what's below deck will change. I'm more concerned with color, shading, and readability.

I guess what I'm getting at is, I know everything looks flat. But it works so ... where to go from here?

If anyone has any suggestions or feedback I'd be appreciative.

Time to get back on that horse. It's been so long, I'd really appreciate any feedback anyone has.

Pixel Art / Flat face portrait

I'm having trouble with a particular portrait. Looks very flat and lifeless. I'm guessing it's somewhere in the shading? I'm not sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pixel Art / Stuck on a portrait
« on: August 16, 2018, 04:20:03 am »

This is a portrait I'm doing from a photo. I'm not sure why I'm not quite happy with it. The overshirt definitely needs more work but I've always struggled with cloth. And the hair doesn't stand out to me as being horrible, but I know it could be better.

Does anyone have suggestions what this is missing or where it could be improved?

Pixel Art / Nervous beach girl portrait

Here is a nervous pale beach girl. I think she lacks depth but I'm not sure why. Mostly happy with her clothes though. I usually struggle a lot more with cloth.

I tried to convey frazzled hair without going overboard.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or insight.

Pixel Art / Portrait

Here's another character in a game I'm working on. Critiques? Her left cheek never quite looked right. And her forehead lighting also seems off but I can't place why.

I'm actually happy with her dreads but if someone has critiques I'd love to hear them. Hair is usually the biggest struggle for me but this came together pretty effortlessly.

Clothes also, but I ran out of ideas so I tried to play it safe here. I don't hate it but I don't love it.

Thanks for any advice anyone has!

Pixel Art / Making a mundane fish look evil (and well drawn)
« on: March 02, 2018, 05:07:35 am »
So here is one of the most basic enemies of my game.

Problem one is it doesn't look menacing or evil or dangerous or threatening whatsoever.

Problem two is it's also just not all that well done.

Here is an extremely rough 2 frame animation just to keep in mind whatever I do will have to be animated. Specifically I don't know that scales read very when they are dancing around.

Any advice on how to improve the thing in general, or more specifically what might make it look like a more interesting enemy, would be appreciated (I think it's somewhere in the eyes, but I just ran out of pixels to convey any information).

Pixel Art / Portrait of a plucky scientist (clothes are hard)
« on: February 05, 2018, 02:21:15 am »

Also hair is hard. And lighting is also hard but that's unrelated to pixel art. The main problem is I cannot get her blouse to look right. Folds of clothing never work out (except that generic one I use for everything on her sleeve). And looking at references doesn't seem to help.

I suppose more contrast would help in general. I'm not sure about the outline either. I guess I just need a general critique but I especially need help with clothing. Thanks for any advice anyone has.

Pixel Art / Struggles with limiting color pallette (another portrait)
« on: January 25, 2018, 04:48:14 am »

Based on feedback I've gotten I found I tend to use too many colors. Whenever I run into a problem I just add more colors till it looks like noise and then I pull back. So this portrait I was very aware of keeping colors limited. I'm already at 6 and I'm still not happy with the depth and detail I'm getting.

And his hair is boring too. But all I can think of is to add more colors.

And then whatever is going on with his clothes is a whole other problem. And also maybe his head is too big for his body? But that doesn't seem like the main problem. I just can't place exactly what the main problem is.

For backstory (whatever it's worth), this character is a cantankerous unhappy old man. But capable and reliable all the same.  I think the furrowed brow and shape of everything conveys that. But it just looks boring overall. Especially compared to my other portraits I've done.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Pixel Art / First Walk Cycle
« on: January 20, 2018, 07:52:54 pm »

Here's the star of my video game.

I've had this animation for a while and it always seemed a little stiff. I just added the bouncy coat today and it improved the feel quite a bit. But are the buttons on his jacket moving too much? They looked weirder when they didn't move. I kept wanting to do something with his beard too but figured it would be the same as the buttons but worse.

And it's not animation related but I'm not sure about the coloring of everything either. He had a gray jacket before that I liked more but someone pointed out the drab colors didn't make him look like the main character and I had to agree.

If anyone has a critique of my first walk cycle I'd love to hear it.
